Ask the Mom Squad

As parents, we all need a little help every now and then. I have been blessed to have a diverse group of moms that I interact with on a daily basis, and I often go to them for advice! Many of these moms I have met through High Country Mommies, as we share our parenting journey there.

We have assembled a group of “experts” to try to find answers to questions you may have! They may not know the answer to everything, but they may know where to find it! To submit a question, click Contact Us, and say Ask The Mom Squad in the subject line. If we don’t have your topic featured below, I’ll find someone who can help you!!  We’ll post it on the site when we get your answer! Be sure to tell us your name if you’d like it to be included, or you can specify “anonynous.”

Our “Ask the Mom Squad” Panel:

Sarah Pinnix: Family Life and Parenting, Blogging

I’m founder and editor of The High Country Mom Squad. I’m a 34-year-old mother of three, who has lived in the High Country for the past 16 years. I’ve been a K-8 music teacher at Valle Crucis, Mabel, and Cove Creek, and I currently teach private voice and piano lessons. I’ve served in leadership with our local MOPS, and am a member of High Country Mommies.

My Favorite Tip: Everyone gives and receives love in different ways. Find your child’s Love Language, and try to reach them in ways that speak to them as an individual. Does your daughter have a Physical Touch love language? Let her hug you while you brush her tangles out. Gifts? Put a card in her lunchbox.

Lessa Edwards: Cleaning and Home Organization

Lessa is first and foremost mom to the best little girl anyone could ask for. She has lived in the Boone area for 9 years now and makes a living as a professional housekeeper and organizer. She makes clean look easy!

Favorite Tip: If you want to make your mirrors, glass or windows sparkle, mix 2 teaspoons of lemon joy, 1 oz of lemon ammonia and 2 cups of water together. Spray it on any glass surface and wipe with a dry, lint free cloth for a beautiful streak free shine!

Maggie Farrington: Photography/ Photoshop

Maggie is a High Country mom to her daughter, Macyn (almost 2), and is expecting a baby boy in March 2009. She and her husband, Brad, have lived in Boone for a little over three years now and are hoping to never move away ever again! She is a 1999 ASU graduate and is a part-time therapist in private practice as well as a parttime photographer and a full-time wife and momma! Originally falling in love with black and white photography while locking herself away in the art department’s dark room, Maggie has also found a love for digital color photography through her fun and nontraditional style of catching children in their element of play. Visit Maggie at www.farringtonphotography.com

Favorite tip– Catch ’em being themselves! Don’t worry about getting that perfect smile- but capture the naturally goofy expression!

Niki Miller: Sewing and Crafting
Niki Miller is a full-time mom to her two children, Liliana (2 1/2) and Graves (8 months), and site administrator of HighCountryMommies.com.  She started sewing with her mom when she was 7 years old. As an adult, sewing things for her daughter re-kindled the passion for sewing and crafting. Niki has a small internet-based store, Niki’s Knacks, where she sells handcrafted children’s items. She enjoys creating new products for people and helping others to learn the art of sewing and crafting. Niki hopes to one day teach beginner sewing lessons to children of the High Country.

My favorite tip: The internet is a sewer’s paradise! There are hundreds of patterns and tutorials that can be accessed for free. Never buy a pattern until you’ve searched the internet for a free one!

Barb Kelley: Food/ Cooking (and bringing up boys!)

I’m a High Country mom of four sons ranging from 14 to 20 years old. Sarah invited me to open my kitchen and talk about cooking, recipes, and all things FOOD. Barb Kelley is our Tasty Tuesday Columnist and food expert. Be sure to visit the yummy food blog she publishes with her sister, My Sister’s Kitchen.

Nicole Shoychid: Natural/Green Living

Nicole moved to Boone 2000 from the west coast and married here in 2004. She obtained Masters and Specialist degrees in School Psychology from Appalachian State University in 2006. Currently, Nicole’s number one job is raising her children. In her non-mommy time she enjoys spending time with her friends, rock climbing, and doing anything that gets her outside. She has a passion for environmental stewardship and attempting to live simply and naturally.

Favorite Tip…
We can not do everything…but do not let this stop you from something. Every small step you take to make your life healthier and more in balance with all living things is important. Start at home and take steps to toxin-proof your home.
