Happy New Year! As we begin a new year this January, it is inevitable that we reflect upon what the year 2011 has brought about in our lives. Some events will have been wonderful growing experiences and some not so great! However, the fact remains that each incident, whether positive or negative has grown us in some way. We have to choose how those situations will effect us and allow it to stagnate us, or move us forward.

Even if some things have been painful and have made us STOP in our tracks, we CAN move forward. I can say that because I have been there, and I have chosen to look at how I can be a better person, and at how circumstances can CATAPULT me towards my goals in life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it is easy!

You see, if we choose, this new month of January can usher in a new beginning! A new beginning of how we think, how we act and react, and how we are going to impact others with our attitudes and outlook. Let’s make this our motto: It’s A New Season, It’s A New Day, and I believe it will change our lives and this year, will be a year of positive growth and change!

On Friday…

It’s a new season of Skiing and Fresh Fridays at Appalachian Ski Mtn. are back better than ever.  Throughout the winter season, the Appalachian Terrain Park or ATP will construct park set ups for the daring ski crowd, showing their dedication to  the needs of parks and their changes. Always fun, low key and laid back, Fresh Fridays are free to participate on with a ski ticket. Times this Friday are 5-8pm with Registration from 5-6:30pm at the Lodge, and riders can go as many times as they want, in any order they want, just like a normal day of riding with friends. Registration will be from 5:00-6:30 at the registration desk on the Upper Level of the Lodge, and the Shred Sesh is from 7-8pm. Awards will follow immediately after the Jam Session going to the top “Standouts” throughout the session. Competitors of the Shred Session must fill out a waiver. Have you been wanting to try some new Snow Sports? Well here is your chance for Kids and Adults at the 17th annual National Winter Trails Day – Winter Feels Good! Held at the Sugar Mountain Resort this Saturday, Jan. 7th, from 9am – 3pm, everyone young and old will get the chance to learn about Snow Sports and try Snowshoeing for FREE, finding out just how much fun and fit it is. Held at Michael’s Arts and Crafts Store, Instructor, Holly Soukup will give a demo and help teach those that are beginners and intermediate level painters the process of painting their artwork. The artwork is completed in one workshop session, so bring a friend and join the fun! . Then from 2:30pm – 5pm, join Holly again for a Water-Scape Acrylic Painting Workshop. The weather hasn’t been exactly cooperating as far as the “feel” of Christmas, but there sure is a lot going on around the High Country! The season is going to be what we make of it, busy, stressed and hurried, or a time of giving, sharing, and reflecting on what Christmas means. As I have looked around and seen the Christmas Lights and admired the little Christmas Village up here, aka – Blowing Rock and Chetola Resort, I am grateful to live in such a wonderful area!

Looking at the shops and stores decorated, it brings happy memories of days past and listening online to Christmas music, has been lots of fun. Oh, and all of the Christmas movies…wow, for some of them you need a box of tissue!

Going Christmas shopping has been great, really no problems and most people have remained their friendly self instead of showing a demon-possessed side that most of us never see!  In the end though, I think that we have to thank God and count our Blessings before getting mad at whatever Christmas demands from us. John 3:16 states that “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him,should not perish, but have everlasting life!” This is the real reason for the season!

As the 25th of December gets closer, and we get busier, going to parties, shopping, decorating, wrapping presents, it really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there. And remember it was Mary who wrapped the very first Christmas present…JESUS! Merry Christmas!

Well, we’ve had another snow, and doesn’t it just get you in the Christmas mood? It sure does me! As a Florida girl, I love seeing the weather fit the seasons up here, and I enjoy just having a change of seasons! I’ve seen some comments about “Who’s been shaking up the snow globe I live in here?”. I can honestly say that it has not been me, but now my hubby is a different story! You see, he is known for praying for the “S” word(SNOW)...and has been threatened that if he doesn’t stop, well, we’ll just leave it at that, haha!

It’s December already and the Christmas Season is upon us! After surviving Black Friday with only one very rude guy, (I won’t go into the details), I made it through, and yes, I did find some great bargains and I might do it again. I know, I know, it seems foolish, but on the whole, it was a positive experience! And, I saw friends along the way, you know who you are, and that made it fun.

It was however, one of the craziest things I have ever seen! I happened to go to Walmart at 10pm Thanksgiving night and there wasn’t a shopping cart to be found. I had to wait for someone leaving to grab one, and of course, I didn’t follow directions and get a map of where all of the sale items were and didn’t print my items, so I ended up walking all over just to find the simplest items. But, it made it kind of fun! Oh, and I know at least 1/2 of Watauga County was there…in Walmart…in Boone!

Afterwards, I still have the resounding Thankfulness going through my mind. That we have so much to be Thankful for….more than many people! If we can just remember this thought and act upon it, we will be happier people and others will see it and they’ll become happier too! It can’t help but spread! So Deck the Halls, and the Weekend Too!

I encourage you all to try it…go the extra mile, help someone in need, give a smile and a warm handshake…it will make a difference!

Have you been searching for something easy, yet elegant to spruce up your Thanksgiving Dinner Table? Well, here is an easy fix that won’t put a dent in your wallet. This is so easy, and the great part about it is that much of the needed supplies can be gotten at any number of Dollar Stores. I remember seeing this craft a long time ago, and was recently reminded of these beautiful Thanksgiving Votive or Pillar Candles that add warmth and beauty to any table or setting.

Supplies needed are:

White or Cream colored Votive or Pillar Candle

(Use another color candle for more drama if you like!)

Twine, Raffia, or Ribbon of your Choice

Silk or Faux Fall Leaves and/or Flowers

Cinnamon Sticks  and Dried Orange Slices (Optional)

Scissors

Dab of Glue, or Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks

To make your Thanksgiving Votive Candles:

1) Pick out some nice and colorful Leaves and/or Flowers to go around your votive candle. Since it is near the end of the Autumn and Fall Season, you can find lots of Fall decorations 50% or more off. Look for Floral Stems, Floral Picks, Fall Leaf Garland, etc. for some great choices. You can also use Cinnamon Sticks and Dried Orange Slices to decorate your candle.

2) Place around the candle the way you would like them, but make sure to leave some of the candle showing in between the Leaves or Flowers. Use small, medium, or large Leaves and Flowers, depending upon your preference and candle size. If you are using a smaller Votive Candle, you can place the candle in a small glass and glue your Flowers and Leaves onto the glass.

3) Place a dab of Glue or use your Hot Glue Gun and put a little bit of hot glue on the back of your Leaf or Flower.

4) Arrange the Leaves, Cinnamon Sticks, Dried Orange Slices, and Flowers on the sides of your candle. Make sure that they are not hanging over the top of the candle to where they would catch on fire. It is your design, make it with as little or as much as you like!

5) Finally, tie a string of Twine, Raffia, or Ribbon around the candle. If you are using Flowers, you may need to glue them on after the Ribbon, or wind around the Flowers. Finish it with a Bow if you choose and place on a candle holder or plate.

Voila! You have a colorful, soothing and warm decoration for your Thanksgiving Dinner Table.

Happy Thanksgiving to you! Can you believe how fast this Holiday has come upon us? Time just seems to fly by anymore these days. As you know, I have been writing for the last few weeks about Thanksgiving, and kind of what it means to me.

Well, this week is not really much different, because I think it is so important to reflect on all that God has blessed us with and how we have family and friends to share this special day.

We, personally will have a house full, close to 20 people, and I can’t wait! I love to decorate and make all the fixin’s, of course, others are bringing food as well, but we have some traditions that only really happen on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.

One of the food traditions we have is to make turkey gravy with noodles in it to spoon over our mashed potatoes. And, we still have the regular yummy turkey gravy, but this is special! We also have mashed potatoes a little different than most people. When I was growing up, my parents wanted us to eat more carrots, so my mom began to cook carrots with the potatoes and then mashed them together, whipped them with some milk and butter, and boy are they delish!!! Try it sometime!

As we prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday, I am thinking about how I love to open my house up and entertain with friends since I don’t have my immediate family up here in the High Country. Even so, our wonderful friends are our family, and with the gift of Hospitality, I love to go all out! I’ve even been accused of doing too much…Who Me? Nah! You can never do too much, can you? (Smiling as I’m writing this )

I do have to say, that I try to plan much more efficiently now in order to have the foods, decorations, etc. that I want for my guests during the Holidays. I also try to make sure that my family and I take time to be with each other and focus on having a Thankful Heart.

It can be so easy for us and, uhmm, me, to get  busy and panicked trying to meet deadlines and fulfill orders with our wooden toy business that I get crabby and frantic. Keeping a thankful heart brings perspective of all that we do have and what we can do to help others less fortunate. This includes a special “Thank You” to our Veterans as well! If it wasn’t for the Veterans of the United States, we wouldn’t have the freedoms that we have today. We appreciate you and salute you!

So, if you will, join me in taking some time to have a Thankful Heart, Thank a Veteran, and pass it on to others! Let us know what are some of the things you are Thankful for this Holiday season. We would love for you to share. Oh, and have fun this weekend!

As we move into the month of November, it always brings to my mind about Thanksgiving, as of course, it would for most people. But, it really makes me think about all of the things that I “Do” have and maybe not focus so much on what I “Don’t” have.

November, in my opinion, really brings to light how great it is to live here in the High Country, to have the change of the seasons, to enjoy God’s creation and handiwork with the mountains, trees, flowers and wildlife. I haven’t always had the change of seasons in places that I have lived and always longed for it.

November, makes me think of how I am blessed to live where my kids can receive a good, decent, and wholesome education with God-Fearing Teachers and Educators. For the most part, I don’t have to worry about what my kids are being taught, which is not the case where I moved from.

November, makes me think of how I have been blessed with such wonderful friends that can and do share in the good and the bad. And, yes, that is not necessarily up here in the High Country, but areas of the country can be friendlier than others…just saying! I could go on and on, but these are a few of the topics that I find my mind pondering.

Finally, November, is an awesome month, certainly a Blessed Time of Year, and the Holiday of Thanksgiving is just icing on the cake so to speak. I love it and hope it is a great time of year for you as well. Here are some great weekend activities for lots of Fun. Make sure to take advantage of them!
