Happy February, also known as the “Month of Love”. This month is a great opportunity for us all to take a closer look at what LOVE really means. There are different types of Love, Love between family and friends called “Philos” Love, then Love that is romantic is “Eros” Love, and we have unconditional Love from God above called “Agape” Love.

Now, you may wonder why we are having this discussion with the weekend events news, but LOVE transcends throughout every part of our day, weekday and weekend. We all have Love to give, even if we don’t feel like we are receiving it. And, just like that old saying,…“It is better to give than to receive” is so true.

If there is a feeling of a lack of love in our lives, let’s turn that around by stepping out and focusing on how we can be more loving and giving to others less fortunate. It will make a world of difference, and guess what? All of a sudden, there will be a feeling that comes over, and you will begin to feel so much warmth inside, you will definitely know you are being loved! 

So take the time and show some LOVE this weekend with family and friends, and receive LOVE from above as well!

On Friday…

Ongoing each Friday, now through May, there’s a new Kids program called “Blazing Easels” at the Turchin Center giving parents and children fun things to do during Downtown Boone’s First Friday Art Crawls. This free program is for kids 7-12 yrs. of age, operates the 1st Friday of every month from 3:30-5pm. With only room for 20 kids, make sure to call ahead and have your child put on the list. Ongoing each Saturday, now through March 1st, bring out your child’s artistic abilities at the BRAHM Saturday Art Club for kids ages 8-14. Held at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum from 10am – 12noon, taking inspiration from the Scottish art program Room 13, kids will use a variety of mediums from acrylics, oils, charcoal, pastels, and more to create special art that has significance to them with the help of ASU faculty and students. Blowing Rock’s Winterfest is Here! In it’s 14th year, Winterfest was started to show off Blowing Rock and the High Country in the off season. Recently, Blowing Rock was named by professional jouranalists as “North Carolina’s prettiest town”! It is no wonder that we would want to show off the beauty of this area.

Winterfest begins on Thursday and culminates the end of an amazing weekend on Sunday, Jan. 26th-29th. This isn’t just an event, the whole town gets involved. From the local elementary school, to the shops, quaint stores, outlet malls, restaurants and resorts, it is a one-of-a-kind weekend you won’t soon forget and one that keeps you wanting to come back every year.

From Concerts to Game Shows, to fine dining Food Feasts to Scavenger Hunts, and so many more activities, of course topping it off with the annual Polar Plunge, there is fun for everyone! On Thursday…

Thursday starts Winterfest off with an All Day Shop Til You Drop day where you can shop to your heart’s content in the quaint Boutiques and Specialty Gift Shops along with the stores at the Tanger Outlet Center.

Then from 5:30-7:30 pm,  it’s Winterfeast where you can tickle your palate with a variety of the best foods from the Blowing Rock area. Do you love to play search and find games? Here’s your invitation to get in on the hunt and participate in the Inaugural Winterfest Scavenger Hunt taking place on Friday and Saturday during the Winterfest weekend. Start the hunt by picking up your forms at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce office, then answer the questions about Winter and Winterfest, visit the Blowing Rock stores that are participating to find the items you need and drop everything back off at the office again. Held at the Blowing Rock Elementary School you can get a Spaghetti Dinner for $5 and Bingo Cards for just $1. So join them for some great food, fun, and fundraising.

For dessert, weather permitting, at Blowing Rock’s Memorial Park, there will be a blazing Dusk Bonfire. Everything you need to make S’mores and Toasted Marshmallows will be provided and is hosted by the Blowing Rock Boy Scouts. Help support these awesome young men!

For some special snow sports, it’s the Appalachian Ski Mountain Winterfest Special Event for Night Skiing from 5-12 midnight. Offering special pricing on Ski and Snowboarding lessons, make the most of the snow that is there and have a blast! Reservations are required, so call and make it a date.

If music is more to your liking, take in a concert with the Winter Blues Concert featuring Beverly “Guitar” Watkins and The King Bees starting at 7:30pm. Winterfest wouldn’t be the same without the annual Polar Plunge and this year the #1 spectator sport in Blowing Rock is benefiting the Wine To Water project. Starting at 10am, come watch brave or maybe crazy jumpers take the plunge for a good cause bringing awareness to the Boone based organization helping to provide clean water for villages in Ethiopia. Everyone is invited to be a part and take the plunge as well costing only $25 to jump. Local celebrities will take part including Doc Hendley, the founder of Wine To Water.

There will also be plenty of Kids Activities, so parents bring the kids for FUN happenings like Face Painting, Dancing, and Snowflake Decorating. From 10am – 4pm, head on over to the American Legion Hall right behind Memorial Park for all of the great things going on, sponsored by the High Country Cloggers.

Another activity for the kids is a special reading and book signing of Isabella Propellor and the Magic Beanie. Join Children’s author and Blowing Rock resident, Jonathan Graves from 11am – 1pm, as he gives a performance of his Children’s Literary Classics Approved book. His story is set in the Village of Blowing Rock and goes on a flying journey with her pal and pet dog Mullaby, and a flying friend named Red Tail. You won’t want to miss it!

At 3pm, bring the kids together for Snowflake decorating held at the Parks and Rec Center. After creating dazzling displays, the kids can dance as they go down Main Street in Blowing Rock for the Snowflake Parade.

For those that want to take in some outdoor fun, participate in the Cross Country Ski & Snow Equipment Exhibition sponsored by Blowing Rock Realty and SweetGrass. Taking place from 10am – 5pm, at the beautiful grounds of SweetGrass off Hwy. 221 about 6 miles outside of Blowing Rock, you will have a great time with Games, Prizes, even Gift Certificates to First Tracks in Boone, a Snowdog Building contest, Hot Chocolate and Cookies, plus more. At 2pm make your way over to the Green Park Inn for the Winterfest Wine Tasting where you will be able to taste a well rounded variety of wines, locally, regionally, and internationally. Starting off the day at 8-11am is the Winterfest Pancake Breakfast held at the Blowing Rock School Cafeteria hosted by Knights On Main. Enjoy a delicious breakfast with the proceeds going to the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue whose awesome volunteers will be serving all of the trimmings! Tickets are available at the door.

Get in on the last day of the All Day Shop Til You Drop at the lovely Boutiques and Specialty Stores, along with the Tanger Outlet Center.

Grab some free Hot Chocolate at the Memorial Park and keep warm.

See the beautiful art at the Ice Carving Demonstrations in Memorial Park at 1pm, the heart of Blowing Rock.

At 1:30pm, it’s the long awaited and fun 4th annual “Winter Paws” Dog Show, starting with registration at 1pm and held at the Blowing Rock School Gym and co-sponsored by The Pet Place and the Watauga County Humane Society. Benefiting homeless animals around the area, the Dog Show has friendly competitions awarding 10 different categories that include Owner & Dog Look-Alike, Best Handshake, Most Mysterious Heritage, Most EAR-ristible Ears, Best Smile, and so much more. Winners will go on to compete for the title of The People’s Choice Award with the grand prize of a $50 gift certificate to The Pet Place. The Humane Society will showcase several shelter dogs currently available for adoption, and the event will also include a raffle for a one-year supply of dog food. There is a new after-school option on Wednesdays for K-5 students in the High Country!  Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock is offering an after-school program with a fitness focus, in a fun atmosphere. Ruthie Lile, Recreation Program Coordinator, and Chetola fitness staff will facilitate organized fitness activities and supervised pool play.  The fitness activities include Field Games, Circuits, Yoga, Hiking, Aqua Games, Active Scavenger Hunts and more.

I’ve always been comfortable on a stage, as far back as I could remember. I would prefer to be under the lights in front of 1000 people rather than perform for a small group, any day.  I grew up dancing, singing and acting, and for the most part, stage fright doesn’t rear it’s ugly head.  Interestingly enough, I have phone anxiety, so it makes me more nervous to call someone than speak to a large crowd.

Enough about me, you already know I’m weird. What about you? Are you nervous speaking up in a meeting? Do you long to express yourself with acting? Do you want to overome that sinking feeling when you stand at a podium?

Whether you are looking to express yourself dynamically onstage, at the podium, in group meetings or in everyday situations this class is for you. Using improv technique you will improve control of your voice, discover techniques to channel “stage fright,” gain confidence, and learn to make your body work for you in a fun, interactive environment. Everyone has within them a unique way of expressing themselves that is compelling to others. You don’t have to worry about getting Cabin Fever or the Winter Blues! Why you ask?

Because The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is working hand-in-hand with Appalachian State University’s Dept. of Arts to bring about Visual Art Workshops. These will be for all ages, from kids, teens, and adults starting this month, January, and continuing during these next few winter months. Instead of being cooped up, this will give a place to nurture the creativity and artist within. Who knows? You or your child might be the next Monet or Picasso!

Workshops for the kids begin with After School Art: Boone Room 13 on Mondays from 3:15 – 4:30pm. Classes will run from January 23rd through February 27th and will be in Turchin Center Classroom 3200. The sessions will be taught by Art Education Faculty, as well as, Elementary Education Majors for that one-on-one experience and costs $30, a steal by any means! Taking inspiration from Room 13 in Scotland, the kids, age 7 to 13, will be able to use the art studio to create and design such things as Paintings, Printmaking, Comic books, Boxing Rings, Clay replicas or Sculptures, and much more. They will also be able to work with a management team that they have selected to give guidance, order supplies, help with fund raising and oversee their space or room.

Another Workshop for the kids being offered is the Drawing Club on Tuesdays from 3:15 – 4:30pm and runs from January 24th through to March 6th. Held in the Turchin Center Classroom 3200, this workshop is taught by Art Education Faculty and Art Education Majors and also costs $30. During these sessions, the spontaneity and creativity will flow as the imagination is coaxed to reveal itself! Kids can draw anything that they wish from animals, aliens, landscapes, flowers, people, self-portraits, cartoon characters, anything that comes to mind…and then explore that even more! With plenty of sketchbooks, paper, pencils and erasers, pastels and charcoal, the possibilities are endless.

For the Adults, this Workshop is called the “Open Life Drawing Sessions” attended and supervised by Jason Watson, an Assistant Professor in the Art Department. The class will be from 7-10pm on Tuesdays from January 17th through May 1st in the Turchin Center Classroom 3200 with the 1st session costing $5, 5 sessions – $15, and 10 sessions – $25, and vouchers for the classes are required to be purchased before attending the sessions with only 20 spaces available, so arrive a few minutes early to make sure you have a space.

Open to ASU staff, students and the community, Artists from beginners to expert are welcome to participate in these ongoing and open studio sessions. (Caution – there will be live nude models). Bring your own materials and creativity, but the space and inspiration is provided, and classes are non-instructional. The sessions will have a blend of long and short poses and will use both male and female models.

Discovering inspiration and exploration of the imagination is what helps us to grow intellectually, so take this opportunity to build upon what is already in the mind and bring it out on paper and canvas for the whole world to participate in with you!

Happy New Year! As we begin a new year this January, it is inevitable that we reflect upon what the year 2011 has brought about in our lives. Some events will have been wonderful growing experiences and some not so great! However, the fact remains that each incident, whether positive or negative has grown us in some way. We have to choose how those situations will effect us and allow it to stagnate us, or move us forward.

Even if some things have been painful and have made us STOP in our tracks, we CAN move forward. I can say that because I have been there, and I have chosen to look at how I can be a better person, and at how circumstances can CATAPULT me towards my goals in life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it is easy!

You see, if we choose, this new month of January can usher in a new beginning! A new beginning of how we think, how we act and react, and how we are going to impact others with our attitudes and outlook. Let’s make this our motto: It’s A New Season, It’s A New Day, and I believe it will change our lives and this year, will be a year of positive growth and change!

On Friday…

It’s a new season of Skiing and Fresh Fridays at Appalachian Ski Mtn. are back better than ever.  Throughout the winter season, the Appalachian Terrain Park or ATP will construct park set ups for the daring ski crowd, showing their dedication to  the needs of parks and their changes. Always fun, low key and laid back, Fresh Fridays are free to participate on with a ski ticket. Times this Friday are 5-8pm with Registration from 5-6:30pm at the Lodge, and riders can go as many times as they want, in any order they want, just like a normal day of riding with friends. Registration will be from 5:00-6:30 at the registration desk on the Upper Level of the Lodge, and the Shred Sesh is from 7-8pm. Awards will follow immediately after the Jam Session going to the top “Standouts” throughout the session. Competitors of the Shred Session must fill out a waiver. Have you been wanting to try some new Snow Sports? Well here is your chance for Kids and Adults at the 17th annual National Winter Trails Day – Winter Feels Good! The weather hasn’t been exactly cooperating as far as the “feel” of Christmas, but there sure is a lot going on around the High Country! The season is going to be what we make of it, busy, stressed and hurried, or a time of giving, sharing, and reflecting on what Christmas means. As I have looked around and seen the Christmas Lights and admired the little Christmas Village up here, aka – Blowing Rock and Chetola Resort, I am grateful to live in such a wonderful area!

Looking at the shops and stores decorated, it brings happy memories of days past and listening online to Christmas music, has been lots of fun. Oh, and all of the Christmas movies…wow, for some of them you need a box of tissue!

Going Christmas shopping has been great, really no problems and most people have remained their friendly self instead of showing a demon-possessed side that most of us never see!  In the end though, I think that we have to thank God and count our Blessings before getting mad at whatever Christmas demands from us. John 3:16 states that “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him,should not perish, but have everlasting life!” This is the real reason for the season!

As the 25th of December gets closer, and we get busier, going to parties, shopping, decorating, wrapping presents, it really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there. And remember it was Mary who wrapped the very first Christmas present…JESUS! Merry Christmas!

Well, we’ve had another snow, and doesn’t it just get you in the Christmas mood? It sure does me! As a Florida girl, I love seeing the weather fit the seasons up here, and I enjoy just having a change of seasons! I’ve seen some comments about “Who’s been shaking up the snow globe I live in here?”. I can honestly say that it has not been me, but now my hubby is a different story! You see, he is known for praying for the “S” word(SNOW)...and has been threatened that if he doesn’t stop, well, we’ll just leave it at that, haha!

Anyway, I do love the snow when it is not being a hindrance, or putting people’s lives in danger. It is so beautiful, serene and brings a sense of crisp clean! ‘Tis the Season, yet again! Not only the Christmas holiday season, but Nutcracker Ballet season as well!  December 9-11, hundreds of children and adults from Studio K Youth Ballet take the stage at Farthing Auditorium on the ASU Campus. Snowflakes twirl, soldier dolls leap, and the Sugar Plum Fairy dazzles the audience.

The great thing about this presentation of the Nutcracker Ballet is that children of all ages are welcome. “Hundreds of children will grace the stage, and we hope that many children will fill the audience as well.” Ballet director Cay Harkins said. “I’ve had parents tell me their toddlers, and even infants, were mesmerized throughout the whole performance. And if the kids are inspired to dance in the aisles, that’s OK too.”

So don’t worry about shushing your kids when they gasp at the magic of the Nutcracker, as he transforms into the Prince.  Just bring the whole family and be prepared to have a lot of fun. Watch this video for a preview of what you’ll see.
