It’s December already and the Christmas Season is upon us! After surviving Black Friday with only one very rude guy, (I won’t go into the details), I made it through, and yes, I did find some great bargains and I might do it again. I know, I know, it seems foolish, but on the whole, it was a positive experience! And, I saw friends along the way, you know who you are, and that made it fun.

It was however, one of the craziest things I have ever seen! I happened to go to Walmart at 10pm Thanksgiving night and there wasn’t a shopping cart to be found. I had to wait for someone leaving to grab one, and of course, I didn’t follow directions and get a map of where all of the sale items were and didn’t print my items, so I ended up walking all over just to find the simplest items. But, it made it kind of fun! Oh, and I know at least 1/2 of Watauga County was there…in Walmart…in Boone!

Afterwards, I still have the resounding Thankfulness going through my mind. That we have so much to be Thankful for….more than many people! If we can just remember this thought and act upon it, we will be happier people and others will see it and they’ll become happier too! It can’t help but spread! So Deck the Halls, and the Weekend Too!

I encourage you all to try it…go the extra mile, help someone in need, give a smile and a warm handshake…it will make a difference!

Happy Thanksgiving to you! Can you believe how fast this Holiday has come upon us? Time just seems to fly by anymore these days. As you know, I have been writing for the last few weeks about Thanksgiving, and kind of what it means to me.

Well, this week is not really much different, because I think it is so important to reflect on all that God has blessed us with and how we have family and friends to share this special day.

We, personally will have a house full, close to 20 people, and I can’t wait! I love to decorate and make all the fixin’s, of course, others are bringing food as well, but we have some traditions that only really happen on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.

One of the food traditions we have is to make turkey gravy with noodles in it to spoon over our mashed potatoes. And, we still have the regular yummy turkey gravy, but this is special! We also have mashed potatoes a little different than most people. When I was growing up, my parents wanted us to eat more carrots, so my mom began to cook carrots with the potatoes and then mashed them together, whipped them with some milk and butter, and boy are they delish!!! Try it sometime!

As we prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday, I am thinking about how I love to open my house up and entertain with friends since I don’t have my immediate family up here in the High Country. Even so, our wonderful friends are our family, and with the gift of Hospitality, I love to go all out! I’ve even been accused of doing too much…Who Me? Nah! You can never do too much, can you? (Smiling as I’m writing this )

I do have to say, that I try to plan much more efficiently now in order to have the foods, decorations, etc. that I want for my guests during the Holidays. I also try to make sure that my family and I take time to be with each other and focus on having a Thankful Heart.

It can be so easy for us and, uhmm, me, to get  busy and panicked trying to meet deadlines and fulfill orders with our wooden toy business that I get crabby and frantic. Keeping a thankful heart brings perspective of all that we do have and what we can do to help others less fortunate. This includes a special “Thank You” to our Veterans as well! If it wasn’t for the Veterans of the United States, we wouldn’t have the freedoms that we have today. We appreciate you and salute you!

So, if you will, join me in taking some time to have a Thankful Heart, Thank a Veteran, and pass it on to others! Let us know what are some of the things you are Thankful for this Holiday season. We would love for you to share. Oh, and have fun this weekend!

After what has been the most wonderful Fall and Autumn weather, this week has turned very cold! And, the “S” word again…SNOW! Yes, I know, we don’t want to even mention it here, but I think we have had such a beautiful Autumn season so far. The colors of the leaves seemed brighter, and the days have been warmer far longer into October than I remember.

Does it seem this way to you? Or am I just paying more attention this year? I’m not sure, but I have been enjoying it! Hopefully we will still have a few warm days left before it turns all cold and into a totally Frigid Fall, or even a Frigid Winter.

Come on out and make connections with others in our community at the High Country Walk for Moms and Midwives to be held at Valle Crucis Park in the 1st pavilion, Saturday, September 10th, 2011 from 3 pm until dark. The event will include musicians such as Lauren Hayworth with her inspiring mountain songs, and some great tunes from Galaxy Jam to get you moving. Belly Dancers will give a dazzling performance, and an invitation will go out to the little ones to join in for a lesson and performance of their own!

Look for Wellness Tents offering skills and services for the body such as Massage, Accupuncture, Chiropractic, Cranio-Sacral, Reiki, and more with sign-ups beginning at 3 pm! And, in keeping with the health for the whole body, there will be area restaurants and businesses with awesome food and donations to tickle the palette . Of course, local Midwives, Doulas, and Natural Birth Consultants will be available to answer all of your questions.

The Walk will get started at 4 pm and there are plenty of things for the family to do. At the pavilion are grills and picnic tables for eating, space is limited so prepare to share space and make some new friends. There is a kid approved Playground, Pond for fishing and birdwatching, a River for skipping stones and taking a swim, Playhouses under the pine trees, a paved path for Walking and Bike riding, huge grass areas for flying Kites, tossing Frisbees, kicking Balls, and even rolling around in the soft grass.

Many local businesses have given donations for a Silent Auction and you can still help sponsor the event by helping to promote your business and be an advocate in our community. Also, T-Shirts will be available and if you want one for the Festival, register and sign up for a head count for the day’s activites and to order a T-Shirt by August 31st! After that date, the T-Shirts will arrive after the festival.

Did you notice the change in the atmosphere this week? We have started having some cooler weather sparking thoughts of the upcoming Autumn season. I’ve been seeing and feeling just a calm sort of lazy, hazy days when the sun is setting and there is a bit of chill in the air.

That excites me! Fall is my favorite time of the year and I love to decorate and smell pumpkins, cinnamon, cloves…Oh don’t get me started! {smile} Now, I know that there is still some time of warm weather left, and that is great! Not totally ready for Fall, but looking forward to it.

Did last week’s warm weather prompt you to pull out the kids’ summer togs only to find that, oops, that cute t-shirt dress from last year is now on a halter top? The six annual spring Playhouse Consignment Sale and Baby Fair will allow you to update everyone’s wardrobes for a song while also enjoying food, samples, parenting information, kids activities, airwalk, and more. All activities will take place on April 15th and 16th at The National Guard Armory, which is located on Hunting Hills Lane in Boone across from the Watauga County Swim Complex.

Donations of clothes, furniture, toys and more have been pouring into the Armory as volunteers set up this annual sale. “The consignment side features high quality, nearly new clothes, household items and more, while the rummage side always offers incredible deals” explains Playhouse Executive Director Kathy Parham. Those folks wanting first crack at the good stuff will want to check out the Early Bird Sale on Friday, April 15 from 8:30-1:00 and will have to pay a $5 “hunting license” admission fee.

Admission is free for Saturday’s Baby Fair. Held from 8:30-1:00 Saturday, April 16th at the National Guard Armory in Boone, the Baby Fair will have a half-price sale from noon-1 pm.

Saturday’s Baby Fair will feature not only bargains but also information and give-aways to help families.
