Please welcome the High Country Mom Squad’s newest columnist, Amy Forrester!

amy-forrester-pic21Hi!  As the Marketing and Production Director of a travel guide, I try my best to keep a good eye on the most exciting events in the High Country, from the basics to the out-of-the-ordinary.  And as a High Country Mom (to Marley, almost 7, and Delia, 5 and a half), I tend to focus my personal attention on events that are well suited for families.

I’ll be dropping by weekly to let you know what I’ve got in mind and find out what your plans are!  Please always feel free to leave a comment that amends or extends what I have said (I’m a mom, but I still can’t be right all of the time!), or to let folks know about something that I may have missed.

Here’s what I’ve found for this weekend, and please feel free to check out my website at www.NCexplore.com for other information and a comprehensive calendar of events (currently under construction for ease of navigation):

Friday, January 16th :

Saturday, January 17th:

  • Saturday Storytime at the Watauga County Library 11:00-11:45
  • All Weekend: Goody’s is going out of business and you can snatch up some remarkable deals on everything for the whole family – just remember that there are no returns, so buy wisely!! Last time I was in, everything was 30% off or more, but I suspect by this weekend the discounts will be even deeper!

Don’t forget the activites that are available on a regular basis!  Sometimes they are easy to overlook, but there are so many fun things to do with the family in our area, like…

  • Rollerskating at Skateworld (open 1-3 Saturday, 2-4 Sunday for the best “little kid” skate times, evening sessions available, as well)
  • Music and Dancing every Saturday night at Mountain Music Jamboree (my kids LOVE this one!) www.MountainMusicJamboree.com
  • Paint some pottery at Paint Your Wings (New Market Center – weekend hours vary, call Heather at 828-262-9919)
  • Snow tubing sessions at Hawksnest all weekend long – http://www.hawksnest-resort.com/
  • Watch some cheese-making at Ashe County Cheese in West Jefferson (cheese making schedule online at http://ashecountycheese.com/schedule.htm and they seem to be making cheese this weekend!)
  • Go sledding on the Beech Mountain Sledding Hill!!  Next to Town Hall, and open 9-5, Beech Mountain makes the fluffy white stuff available to little ones all winter long.  Bring your own sleds.  I recommend waiting for a weekend that is not as bitter cold as this one is threatening to be – they blow snow, so you can go when it is more pleasant and the kids will have much more fun.
  • Snuggle up under a big blanket and read together, drink hot chocolate, eat popcorn, watch movies…. take advantage of the cold weather to bring everyone closer for a real sense of family.

I look forward to hearing your input, and hope that you find something new and exciting to do with your family this weekend!
