Kids Create and Perform at the Playhouse Family Music Festival

Got a crafty kid? Or a fantastic fiddler? A budding ballerina or a pretty good potter? Kids who love to perform or create have two opportunities to shine at the upcoming Playhouse Family Music Festival on August 21st in Sugar Grove.kids show off their artistic side at the fest

“We’ve had the Kids’ Craft Market that lets kids sell their own artwork for three years,” says Playhouse Executive Director Kathy Parham, “but this year we are also adding a Kids’ Talent Show.”

Now in its fourth year, The Playhouse Family Music Festival will be held 10 am-5 pm, Saturday, August 21st at the Historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove, North Carolina, just 7 miles west of Boone. This family-friendly festival returns with new low ticket prices and a diverse slate of performers including Parents Choice award winner Billy Jonas, Appalachian Reggae with Ras Alan, and OrisiRisi African Folklore. “Early bird tickets” are available on the Playhouse website, www.goplayhouse.org, for $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets at the gate will be $13 for adults and $6 for kids 2 and up. Children under 2 are free.

The Kids’ Craft Craft Market will run from 10 am-3 pm while the talent show will be from 1-2 pm. All participants in the market and talent show must be festival ticket-holders.

Kids are advised to bring their artwork, a blanket, a sign and/or price tags and a change purse. “This is a great way for a kid to display their handiwork and even earn some money,” explains Playhouse Executive Director Kathy Parham. Zea and Fiona Marty take the stage in 2007“Kids can sell for the whole time or just for a few minutes. It’s up to them. This is their space at the festival.” All items must be kid-made and priced under $5.

For the talent show, each performer or group will be given a three minute slot and kids are encouraged to call The Playhouse to sign up in advance. Slots will be given out on a first come, first served basis. The Playhouse will provide a sound system but performers will need to bring their own music, instruments or other props.

Kids will also be invited to participate in a drumming workshop over by Nia and Jeff Dickens and will be included in performances by OrisiRisi African Folklore, Mystic Mountain Belly Dance, and Billy Jonas.

Food and adult-made crafts will also be on sale at the festival. Vendors are still accepted—contact The Playhouse. Gordon Hensley, the make-up designer for Tweetsie’s Ghost Train will be doing face painting. “Hair Art” and henna tattoos will also be offered.Playhouse Family Music Festival logo

“Operation Ramona,” a family effort of Craig, Nate and Mercer Fischer will be selling kids’ books and comics at rock bottom prices and donating the proceeds to The Children’s Playhouse. Their book booth is named after the popular Ramona books by Beverly Cleary. The trio is still accepting donations of books at The Playhouse.

The festival is sponsored by pediatric dentists and orthodontists Drs. Mayhew, Scheffler, Hardaway and Conn; Blue Ridge Pediatrics; Mast General Store; Skyline/Skybest; the law firm of Eggers, Eggers, Eggers, and Eggers; BB&T; Harmony Center for Women’s Health and Vitality; BREMCO; RBC Centura; and Northwestern Dance Studios.
