The High Country Rocks with High School Musical 2!

If you have Teens,  Tweens, or elementary kids, you have probably seen Disney’s High School Musical Trilogy!  Our family has loved these movies, and as a huge musical theater fan, it thrills me to see musical movies and plays make a comeback with the pop culture.

Our own Blowing Rock Stage Company will present High School Musical 2 on stage at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock!

April 30-May 9

Adults: $14  Students: $7

I recently got to talk with the director and main characters of HSM2, and they are such energetic and fun folks!  There is no doubt that this production will be top notch!

Director Chris Wright may be familiar to you from his BRSC role as Peter Pan.   He has also appeared around the country in other productions as Riff Raff in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Charlie Brown, and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors.  Chris’ wife, Katie Deal choreographs the high-energy numbers in the show!

When I asked Chris about the difference in directing adults and teens, he said, “There is a different energy they bring, and if you can harness that, it makes the show really spectacular.  They have genuine reactions in their acting, since they are actually in the stage of life they are portraying.”  I completely understood what he was saying as I filmed the video introduction of the cast, and felt their excitement!

“The stage version of Disney’s High School Musical 2 is non-stop from start to finish,” says Chris “Fans can look forward to all the great songs and production numbers, and a few new unexpected surprises! I love the musical numbers HUMU-HUMU and I Don’t Dance. And the scenes with Sharpay and Ryan spying on Troy and Gabriella.”

“We had a great turnout for auditions,” he added. “There were so many great kids, it made casting really tough! There are so many talented kids in the High Country.”

HSM2 features 32 cast members, including College, High School, and Middle School students. Many of the cast are members of Blowing Rock Stage Company’s Teen Actors’ Guild (TAG), whose goals include speaking to their peers through theatre and make a difference in people’s lives.hsm2-basketball

Matt Delaney (22) plays the role of Troy. Matt is a Theater major at ASU, who has played roles in An Ideal Husband at ASU, Peter Pan and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown at the Hayes Center in Blowing Rock.

Hannah Fuller (19) playing the role of Sharpay, is a Freshman at ASUhsm2-sharpay majoring in Theater.  She grew up in the High Country and has performed with Lees McRae Summer Theater, Blue Ridge Community Theater, and the Blowing Rock Stage Company. You probably wouldn’t recognize Hannah from her role as Lucy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, since she died her hair black for the part!  Now, of course, she’s blonde for her role as the attention-seeking Sharpay

If your kids would like to “meet” the actors before seeing the show, watch this video for an introduction to the main characters!
