April 11 – 13, 2014 Weekend Events in the High Country

easterinhighcountryIt is an exciting weekend in the High Country. Gorgeous weather paired with awesome events makes for a great weekend for families.

1. There will be Easter Events starting tomorrow at Chick-fil-A Boone, Town of Blowing Rock and at the Watauga County Library. Click here for more information.

2. Playhouse Build Fest – 10-4, Saturday, April 12 at Parkway School (160 Parkway School Drive, Boone. Off of Old 421)

Lego Robots!  Catapults! Forts!  Rockets! Fairy Houses!

Physics Show at 11:00 am !  Learn about Solar Energy and Watersheds!

Organized by The Children’s Playhouse, Build Fest will be a daylong celebration of creativity and problem-solving, offering over 24 hands-on STEM and Art activities and engaging demonstrations for kids aged 2-12 accompanied by their parents. *STEM= science, technology, engineering, and math. There will be all ages activities as well as activities specifically designed for preschool, grades K-3, and grades 4-6.

Activities provided by Appalachian State University, Watauga High School Robotics Club and Mountain Alliance, the Children’s Playhouse, High Country Girl Scouts-Peaks to Piedmont , Watauga County 4-H, Mary’s School, and other community groups. 3. Lowes Build and Grow Clinic – Parents have fun with your children at the Lowes Home Improvement (Boone, Banner Elk and West Jefferson) build and grow clinic. April 12: 10am – 11am. Register here.

4. Family Fun Festival – Saturday, April 12, 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Watauga High School for the first annual Family Fun Festival. The Family Fun Festival is a benefit for the eight Watauga County Extended Learning Centers at each elementary school and the Holiday Snow Day program at Hardin Park.

Watauga County Extended Learning Centers are non-profit child care centers providing quality child care for more than 300 children age’s kindergarten through fifth grades. This will be a day for children and families to have a great time together and benefit a worthy cause at the same time. There will be games, live music, jump houses and a live auction, just to name a few highlights.

Parental supervision is required for children as the regular staff will be in charge of running the games and fun.

The auction will be from 5:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Each school will raise money specific for their after school program. The events for each school are: Bethel- selling popcorn, Blowing Rock- picture booth, Cove Creek- cupcake walk, Green Valley- Corn hole, Hardin Park – Guessing Game, Mabel-braclets for sale, Parkway- 10 carnival games, Valle Crucis – Pie in the face. The auction money and bouncy house will be for scholarships, educational and recreational supplies for all centers.

5. Dollar Days at Grandfather Mountain – All those who work or live in Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany or Wilkes counties, along with guests traveling in the same vehicle, can visit Grandfather Mountain for only $3 during April with proof of local employment or residency.
