Blazing Easels Kids Workshop at ASU Turchin Center

January 2014 brings a new art series for kids at the ASU Turchin Center.


Each Friday, students will learn about other cultures through art! These four-week sessions focus on three different cultures. Students will complete projects that are relevant to the themed culture for that session. All supplies included.


Asian Art

Jan. 24: Chinese New Year dragon puppets!

Jan. 31: Sumi Brush Painting – Paint bamboo using traditional Sumi brush strokes

Feb 7: Japanese Coi – Paint Colorful fish using watercolors.

Feb. 14: – Beijing Opera Masks

Celtic Art

Feb. 21: Celtic Cross – Draw & decorate a tracditional Celtic Cross.

Feb. 28: Shields – Design a family shield using Celtic themes.

March 7: Fairie – Design a fairy house & explore the role of fairies in Celtic lore.

March 14: Manuscripts – Decorate your name in the style of illuminated manuscripts.

African Art

March 21: Clay & Canvas – Colors and symbols of Africa.

March 28: Portrait Painting – Discover the “Big 5”

April 4: Collage – Where in the world is South Africa?

April 11: Stories in Stone – Who are the Sans?

Students may register for one series of classes or register for all three. Families registering more than one child may register each child for $15 per month.   Scholarships based on need will be considered.   Contact Pegge Laine , Outreach coordinator at with questions.

Here is background on the instructor. Kay Bishop has always found her language through a stack of computer paper and colored pencils—fascinated by type and graphics. She has a BFA in Visual Communication from the University of Texas at Austin and is a graphic designer and was an art director for a magazine for five years. Bishop started a children’s art program, Creative Kids Art & Design Workshop for children, ages 4+ which encourages kids to experiment and be creative. She is bilingual, loves learning about other cultures and is passionate about inspiring kids of all ages to be creative through art and design.
