High Country Comicon: Boone’s Own Comic Book Convention

THIS SATURDAY:  If you or your kids love Comic Books, Super Heros, Sci-Fi, and all that, you will want to be at the Boone National Guard Armory from 10 AM – 4PM

It’s a family friendly event with comics, toys, collectible stuff, and an art table for youngsters.  Some Comic Arts Creators will be at the Comicon, as well.  I think it would be fascinating to talk to some of them about how they became interested in creating this type of art, and what’s involved.  One of the artists that will be present at Comicon is Michael Cole-Dragin, who created this piece:

sand trap Wii Cartoon

OK, You KNOW I have actually said that about Bowling!  I get a perfect score on the Wii, too bad it doesn’t translate into real life!

Proceeds will help fund armory operating expenses. You can also see some authentic Star Wars re-enactors from the 501st Legion, who will pose for free photographs with you or your kids.

Comic Books can be highly encouraging to children learning to read, especially non-traditional learners.  According to the education journal The Reading Teacher,

“Comic books have had a motivating power in literacy development for children, especially young boys, since their introduction in the 1930s. This nontraditional type of literature — often dismissed by educators as superficial and shallow — is highly visual, contains complex literary elements, and lends itself to critical examination of moral, ethical, and social issues.” (B. Norton, The Reading Teacher, #57, p. 140) Source.

$2 admission, 8 and under free, and a free comic book with admission. Visit www.hauntedcomputer.com/BooneComicon.html for all the information, details and directions!
