High Country Family Events August 7 – 9

Are you ready for some football? Football returns to the High Country this weekend with Appalachian State Football Fan Fest! The weather is going to provide lots of sunshine so it will be a great weekend to enjoy outside time with your family. Check out all the family-friendly events below. App State Fan Fest 2015

August 7:

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

2. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseMake the ultimate summer souvenir at The Children’s Playhouse in the month of July. We make it easy by stocking everything you need. Take home your special t-shirt home and leave the mess here! We will have adult and children’s sizes on hand.
Cost: $7 per shirt for members, $12 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children’s Playhouse). Bring your own shirt and dye it for $4. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

3. Passport to Imagination at Michael’s – Join us on an imaginary road trip from the beach to the county fair and beyond, with fun kids’ crafts at each stop. $5.00 per session or 3 for $12. Supplies included.

6. Jones House Summer Concert this week will feature Amantha Mill

Concert begins at 5 pm. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on and an umbrella in the event of rain.

7. Music in the Valle – The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park begins Friday, May 22nd, 2015, and continues each Friday evening through September 11th. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale. May 22 – August 14 concerts begin at 7:00PM. August 21 – September 11 concerts begin at 6:30PM.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. August 8:

1. Color Run at Chetola Resort – The second annual 1.2-mile fun run at Chetola Resort will take place Saturday, August 8 at 10am. Registration is only $5 per person and proceeds benefit Blowing Rock C.A.R.E.S. Each registrant receives 1 raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes from such local spots at Magic Mountain Mini Golf and Arcade, The Children’s Playhouse, Sweet Frog, River & Earth Gem Mine and Doc’s Rocks Gem Mine. 2. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner

4. Back 2 School Festival – Welcome any family that is struggling to afford the high costs of back-to-school shopping. If you wouldn’t normally ask for help but need it, please don’t hesitate to come.

5. Craft Time at Michael’s (Duct Tape Pencil Pouch) – 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

6. Lowe’s Build & Grow Kids Clinic –  10:00 am “Marvel Avengers Assemble” Summer continues this week with Hulk’s Tank. Register your child and they can build this awesome project! Watch the Animated Series Sunday Mornings on Disney XD!

9. Blowing Rock Art & History Museum – 1 – 2:30 pm. Appalachian Music and Jug Band Program with John Peterson. Featuring Appalachian music and jug band concert. History of musical instruments used in traditional Appalachian music (guitar, fretted and fretless banjo, mountain dulcimer, and harmonica).Traditional Appalachian music techniques will be demonstrated on each instrument. Program will be followed by an audience participant jug band. Jug band instruments will include: washboard, wash tub bass, tambourine, kazoos, cow bell, jugs, shakers, and more. 10. Learn about Mushrooms at Elk Knob State Park – Come learn about the fascinating world of mushrooms as we have an indoor learning experience, followed by a mushroom hike with fungi guru, Julie Mullis. Meet at the park office.

4:30 p.m. — On-site registration for Junior Mountaineer Kids Club
5:30-6 p.m. — Exclusive autograph and photo session with Appalachian State football student-athletes and coaches for JMKC members only
5:30-7 p.m. — Gates open for the general public
7 p.m.Remember The Titans on Kidd Brewer Stadium videoboard
Note: In an effort to allow as many fans as possible to collect autographs, student-athletes and coaches will be limited to signing one item per fan.

12. Honey Bear Campground Family Drive-In Movie – “Bee Movie“! The movie starts at dusk…. Around 8:30. Check in at our office to purchase you car parking pass! Only $5.00 a car load so load em up!

3. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available. Performance schedule coming soon.

4. Summer Sunday Sunset Concert: Beech Mountain – Join us at the Gazebo next to Fred’s General Mercantile on Beech Mountain at 6:30 PM pm Sunday evenings for a great music series featuring folk, bluegrass and community bands. Sunday August 9th features the Watauga Community Band with marches, show tunes and old-time favorites.
