High Country Family Events July 17 – July 19

How is it mid-July? Summer is going by so fast. Hope you are enjoying all the great summer family activities in the High Country. There are many great family events happening all weekend. Make sure to check out the Kids’ Mini-Market at the Watauga County Farmer’s MarketWe wish you all a wonderful fun-filled weekend!

July 17:

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy some high-flying fun this summer! The K-9s In Flight Frisbee®  Dogs will jump right into the heart of guests when the group of incredibly talented rescue dogs visits Tweetsie Railroad July 18-26, 2015. These gravity-defying canines will entertain the whole family with non-stop, action-packed performances daily at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Also catch their shows during special 7:00 p.m. performances during Tweetsie’s Cool Summer Nights event on Saturday, July 18 and 25. All shows are included in regular admission to the park.

2. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseMake the ultimate summer souvenir at The Children’s Playhouse in the month of July. We make it easy by stocking everything you need. Take home your special t-shirt home and leave the mess here! We will have adult and children’s sizes on hand.
Cost: $7 per shirt for members, $12 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children’s Playhouse). Bring your own shirt and dye it for $4. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

3. Passport to Imagination at Michael’s – Join us on an imaginary road trip from the beach to the county fair and beyond, with fun kids’ crafts at each stop. Today’s craft: Tissue Paper Art. $4.00 per session or 3 for $12. Supplies included.

6. Jones House Summer Concert this week will feature the Jazzfest: Maureen Renihan, Todd Wright, and Shane Chalke’s BE Jazz Band

Concert begins at 5 pm. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on and an umbrella in the event of rain.

7. Music in the Valle – The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park begins Friday, May 22nd, 2015, and continues each Friday evening through September 11th. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale. May 22 – August 14 concerts begin at 7:00PM. August 21 – September 11 concerts begin at 6:30PM.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 9. Horn in the West is Open! – Since 1952, America’s oldest Revolutionary War Drama has thrilled over one million audience members. Loved by old and young alike, “Horn in the West” is located in the Daniel Boone Park in Boone, North Carolina.

July 18:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner

Hey Kids! Bring your own original artwork and homemade crafts, veggies and flowers or plants that you helped grow and sell them yourself at the Kids’ Mini-Market located at the Kids’ Corner of the Watauga County Farmers Market. You can set up for free any time between 9:00 and noon on special Mini-Market days.

3. Summer Stories with Sherry Lovett at BRAHM – From the adventures of the mighty Perseus to the silly antics of Glooskap, heroes all have their stories. There’s sure to be laughter and surprise and lots of fun along the way. And how knows, maybe in the end you’ll see the hero in you.

4. Craft Time at Michael’s (Minion Photo Frame) – 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

7. “Skulls” at Elk Knob Park – Are there things you can tell about an animal by examining its skull? Come learn how to “read” the skull of an animal to determine where its place is in the food chain. This is a drop-in program. The ranger will be at the trailhead from 2-3 pm with the skulls.

8. Family Street Dance at Beech Mountain – Dancers and non-dancers alike will love the old-fashioned street dances on Beech Mountain! A sand dance floor is made in the parking lot in front of town hall and chairs are set out for spectators. Music is provided by a DJ or small local band. Dances take place from 7-9 pm. There’s no charge.

4. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available. Performance schedule coming soon.

5. Summer Sunday Sunset Concert: Beech Mountain – Join us at the Gazebo next to Fred’s General Mercantile on Beech Mountain at 6:30 PM pm Sunday evenings for a great music series featuring folk, bluegrass and community bands. Bring a chair or blanket. Free of charge. Sunday July 19th features the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys.
