High Country Family Weekend Events October 9-11, 2015

Happy weekend! After two rain-filled weekends, we will see sunshine in the High Country this weekend. There are several awesome fall festivals happening so head out and have lots of family fun.  See all the family-friendly events below:

October 9

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

2. Harvest Farm Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch – Come create a memory, get lost in our 7 acre corn maze, pick a pumpkin, take a hayride and have a picnic. Bring your spirit of adventure and a flashlight to explore our family friendly flashlight maze.

3. New River Corn Maze – The maze is OPEN! The team is excited to start their 6th year of business. The hours are Friday and Saturday 10am to dark and Sunday 1pm – dark. Come enjoy this beautiful weekend getting lost in all the fun at the New River Corn Maze!

4. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseCome spend quality family time exploring the art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 on Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

6. Blazing Art Workshop – 3:00pm to 4:00pm: Children’s art workshop at Appalachian State University. Paint a Venetian river scene and add a 3-D gondola. Plus, make a Venetian mask.

7. Hispanic Heritage Festival – Join the Hispanic Student Association in celebrating Hispanic Heritage! There will be food, live performances, dance lessons, craft tables, and much more! Admission: $2 for adults $1 ages 5 – 17

8. Tweetsie’s Ghost Train – Named as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, a ride on the Ghost Train is just the beginning. Take a stroll through the Freaky Forest and encounter dark surprises along the way. Visit the Boneyard and find your way through a 3-D Maze, a disorienting Black Hole and a mystifying Warp Tunnel. Or check out Tweetsie’s Haunted House, where 13 frightening rooms await brave visitors that dare to enter.

9. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner

6. Lowes Build & Grow: Build a Fire Truck with Safety Cards –  (10:00am) Halloween’s right around the corner. Get your kids in the spirit by bringing them into Lowe’s to build their own spooky Haunted Birdhouse!

8. Sugar Mountain Oktoberfest – 

When: October 10-11, 2015; 10AM-5PM

Where: Sugar Mountain, NC

Over 40 artisan’s and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00am each day. A sampling of this year’s vendors include: chair canning, wooden toys, oil paintings, stain glass, handmade furniture, dolls, copper art, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, bird houses, and much more.

Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the mile and a half long chairlift ride to Sugar’s 5,300 ft peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift.

The children’s activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep the young ones entertained from noon until 5:00pm Saturday & Sunday.

Kids can enjoy hay rides, inflatable bounce houses, and a chance to meet Sugar Bear & Sweetie Bear. Cotton candy, popcorn, caramel apples, homemade cookies and drinks are also available in the children’s activity center. All ages are welcome to participate.

9. Howard’s Creek Bazaar

When: October 10, 2015; 9AM-7PM

Info: Bazaar including bake sale, locally made crafts, and locally grown produce.
Fish Fry/Grilled Chicken Dinner from 5 pm – 7 pm

10. Todd’s New River Festival –

When: October 10, 2015 – 9am – 5pm

Where: Todd, NC

Music (some of the best bluegrass in the High Country), crafts, family activities, moonwalk, rubber ducky race on the river, and more in the historic railroad boomtown of Todd.

11. 4th Annual Pumpkin Celebration –

Location: The Pumpkin Patch

Join in on October 10, 2015 for the 4th annual Pumpkin Celebration! Bring the family and enjoy a day full of fun for FREE! The celebration lasts from 10:00am until 5:00 pm and will include the following events:

18ft inflatable slide
Farm animals
Face painting
Games & prizes
Hay ride
Miniature train ride for the kids
Pumpkin painting
Family portraits/pictures by Snap by Ang from 11:00am – 2:00pm

12. FREE Leaf-Lookers Hayride on Beech Mountain – Meet in the Beech Mountain Visitor Center parking lot from 5-7 pm on October 10th for hayrides around the mountain to view the beautiful fall foliage! Hot chocolate will be provided by the Chamber of Commerce. This is a free event.

5. Boone’s Heritage Festival – 

When: October 11, 2015; 10AM-4PM

Where:  Daniel Boone Park/ Hickory Ridge Living History Museum (Next to Horn in the West)

The inaugural Boone Heritage Festival is a friend- and fund-raiser for Hickory Ridge Living History Museum. There will be music, baked goods, basketry, historic crafts, kettle corn, and more! The festival is presented by The Southern Appalachian Historical Association  and the Town of Boone.

6. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available.
