High Country Family Weekend Events September 18 – 20, 2015

Happy weekend! It’s going to be a beautiful weekend. The last official weekend of summer brings us five golf ball days as seen on RaysWeather.com. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled weekend. Check out all the family-friendly events below:

Chetola Smores Blowing Rock NC

September 18

1. Fall Bazaar – Boone United Methodist Church – Located at 471 New Market Blvd, Boone, NC will hold its 31st annual Fall Bazaar Friday, September 18th 7:30am – 6:00pm, and Saturday, September 19th, 7:30am – 11:00am. A Silent Auction will accept bids on Friday until 6:00pm. The famous “BAG” sale will begin on Saturday.

Features include yard sale items, furniture, clothing, baked goods, etc. An Old Fashion Country Breakfast will be served on Friday morning, and muffins available on Saturday morning. This year our Friday Lunch will be a benefit Grace Academy.

Proceeds from the largest recycling event in the High Country will benefit the church building fund and missions. www.booneumc.org 828-264-6090

2. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

3. New River Corn Maze – The maze is OPEN! The team is excited to start their 6th year of business. The hours are Friday and Saturday 10am to dark and Sunday 1pm – dark. Come enjoy this beautiful weekend getting lost in all the fun at the New River Corn Maze!

4. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseCome spend quality family time exploring the art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 on Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

5. Blazing Art Workshop – 3:00pm to 4:00pm: Children’s art workshop at Appalachian State University. Use two different techniques to paint watercolor wildflowers.

6. App State Home Field Hockey Gamethe first regular season home game for the Mountaineers Field Hockey team. the game is against James Madison University and will start at 3:00pm.

7. Family Movie Night at App State – Jurassic World (7:00 pm and 9:30 pm) Popular series at I.G. Greer are $1.00 in advance at PSU Ticket Center located at the PSU Information Center (cash, App Express, & credit cards accepted) and $2.00 at the door (cash only).

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. September 19:

2. Stick Boy Mayview Madness 5k & Blue Ridge Pediatrics 1 Mile Kids Fun Run – Join the 16th Annual Stick Boy Bread Company Mayview Madness 5K Run/Walk and Blue Ridge Pediatric Kids 1-Mile Fun Run. Held on some of the most beautiful roads in the High Country, you will be sure to enjoy the breathtaking views. After the race, enjoy post race beer sampling, Stick Boy Bakery snacks and awards.

The event benefits Blue Ridge Conservancy’s work with willing landowners and local communities to permanently protect land and water resources with agricultural, ecological, cultural, recreational and scenic value in northwest North Carolina.

3. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner

6. 45th Annual Girl Scout Day at Grandfather Mountain – All Girl Scouts and troop leaders are admitted free with proof of membership. Discount admission for other family members. Staff naturalists provide free nature programs throughout the day.

9. International Observe the Moon Night at Elk Knob State Park – 7:30pm: People all over the world are encouraged to view the moon on this date. It will be close to a quarter moon, the perfect time to view the moon through a telescope. Join us at Elk Knob as we participate in some astronomy related activities and view the moon through our telescope. Dress appropriately for the weather keeping in mind that it may be 10 degrees cooler here at Elk Knob than in surrounding communities.

September 20:

3. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available.
