High Country Weekend Family Events August 5-7, 2016

We have a great list of family events for your enjoyment. Friday will be a good time to catch a movie since there will be rain most of the day. The rest of the weekend will give ample amount of sunshine for outdoor family fun. Check out all the events and plan your weekend of fun.

August 5:

1. Family Movies {Now Playing}

2. Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show – 8:00am – 5:00pm See riders take their steeds through the courses! Enjoy the views from the grand stands or aside the rings. Great concessions available. Cash only admission, just $10 for adults, kids 12 and under are free!

3. Family Pool Time: Robbin’s Pool at Broyhill Park in Blowing Rock – Public Swim Times: 11:00am-5:00pm and 6:00pm-8:30pm

4. Music in the Valle – Concerts begin at 7 p.m. from May 27 until August 12. August 19 through September 9, concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a chair or a blanket, a picnic, and lots of friends! Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the Park per person is recommended.

5. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. August 6:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. In addition to all the wonderful produce and products, coffee, cookies, and camaraderie, biscuits, breakfast pizza, and baked goods, seeing friends and swapping lies, the Farmers Market has lots of fun activities.  Nate Harris will be performing on Center Stage, and on side stage, the talented Marshall Daniels will be playing the handpan (looks a lot like a UFO or a wok!) and the hammered dulcimer.   Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture will be having a cooking demonstration to teach us how to convert fresh veggies into delectable delights.  Folks from High Country Recreation will provide information about recreation in the high country and also be selling athletic t-shirts.   (There will be no Kid’s Corner this week.)

2. Wee-Cycle Fall Back to School Sale – 8am-6pm: Name brand and Boutique brands in sizes 0 – 12 Children’s Clothing, sizes 0 – 5 Childrens Shoes, Accessories, Dance-wear, Costume & Dress up, Furniture, Equipment, Games, Books, Toys, Electronics, Maternity, and so much more. Shop Local and support our community!

6. Michaels Craft Store – Kids Club® Medals designed by Sprout Craft– 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

7. Animal Athlete’s: Nature’s Olympics at New River State Park – 2:00pm Kick off the summer Olympics with this program. Our Olympic athletes are truly amazing, and so are many of the creatures that live all around us! Come learn about the amazing feats our animal athletes can perform. See if you have the ability that these creatures do. Join a ranger at New River State Park in the lower picnic area of the 221 Access Area. This program is designed for kids, has hands-on interaction, and will last about an hour.

5. Summer Sunset Concert Series: Amantha Mill – Join at the gazebo next to Fred’s General Mercantile on Sunday evenings from July 10th through August 7th. These family-friendly concerts bring the finest traditional and bluegrass musicians to the mountain free of charge. Concerts begin at 6:30 pm. Bring a blanket or a chair.
