High Country Weekend Family Events December 11 – 13

It may not feel like Christmas in the High Country with our above average temperatures, but there is plenty of holiday cheer for the family this weekend! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday-filled weekend! See all the family-friendly events below:

December 11:

1. Christmas at Apple Hill Farm  Now through Sunday, December 13, the farm will be offering mini-tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Christmas at Apple Hill FarmSundays from 10am to 4pm.

The farm store is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm for all your gift shopping needs.

Join in for a tour of our working alpaca farm where you can meet our alpacas, llamas, goats, donkeys, chickens, and more! After your tour, stop by our farm store to warm up with some homemade hot chocolate while you browse our farm store. You can even pick up a hand-tied wreath or locally grown table top tree.

The Apple Hill Farm Store has been turned into a one-of-a-kind Christmas store with a wide selection of alpaca yarn, socks, scarves, blankets, and teddy bears, as well as a unique collection of locally made gifts and Christmas items for the people on your list.

Grandfather Mountain2. Grandfather Mountain Dollar Days – Celebrate the stillness of winter atop Grandfather Mountain and take advantage of the Dollar Days deals. Residents and employees of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga and Wilkes counties, along with guests traveling in the same vehicle, pay only $3 per person to enter Grandfather Mountain. Proof of residency or employment required. In lieu of $3, the park also accepts a donation of 3 cans of food per person for distribution to local food pantries. 4. Blowing Rock Christmas Stroll – 5:00pm-7:00pm

Come to Blowing Rock for an evening of fun and festivities.

-Shop our stores for special discounts and treats (5-7)

-Join us in the Gazebo for a special concert from the Watauga Community Band (5:30-6:30)

5. Meet the Nutcracker Cast at Chick-fil-A of Boone – Bring your kids and cameras to Chick-fil-A for a fun photo opt with Nutcracker Cara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Mouse King!

6. Bethlehem and Beyond Live Nativity Scene  – You and your family are invited to witness and be a witness by visiting the LIVE Nativity! Located in the heart of Boone! 1055 Blowing Rock Road Boone, NC 28607 (directly across the street from Bojangles)

7. Chetola Resort Festival of Lights A holiday tradition in Blowing Rock, Chetola’s Festival of Lights features a dazzling display of illuminations attracting thousands of visitors each year. A drive around Chetola Lake lets visitors see glittering ice skaters, a nativity scene, Rudolph catching a “big fish” in Chetola Lake, and much more. As visitors enter the resort they are given a guide that details displays and activities taking place throughout the holiday season.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. December 12:

2. 5K Reindeer Run and Blitzen Bash – Join The Williams YMCA of Avery County for our 5K Reindeer Run! This 3.1 mile race is fun for everyone, bring the whole family! You may run, jog or walk the course, whatever pace you choose. Be prepared for sun, wind, rain or snow, it’s December in the mountains! The 5K Reindeer Run begins and ends at the Crossnore School gymnasium. The course is mostly paved but includes some trail and gravel paths. Prizes will be given to the most festively dressed participant and the top finishers. After the race stay for the Blitzen Bash and Silent Auction! Everyone is welcome to party at the Blitzen Bash after the race. The Bash will be held at the Crossnore gymnasium and track. There will be a 1/2 mile kids fun run, hot chocolate, cookies, face painting, bounce house, music, and lots of fun for everyone!

3. Michaels Kids Club® Kids Club Perler Santa Belt Coaster – ($2) Kids craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece.

5. Santa Comes to Beech Mountain – Join in the lobby of 4 Seasons at Beech in the Town of Beech Mountain from 1-3 pm for the opportunity to meet with Santa, have some cookies and hot chocolate and let everyone know what you’d like for Christmas! At 3 pm, walk with Santa down the hall to the Valle de Bravo Restaurant, where you can help him break a traditional Mexican Christmas Pinata! This event is free.

7. Studio K: The Nutcracker Ballet – Shows at 3:00pm and 7:00pm: A cast of over 300 local dancers bring Clara’s dazzling holiday fairy tale to life. Throughout the show, the stage sparkles with playful mice, a court of soldiers, guardian angels, graceful snowflakes, waltzing flowers, precious bonbons, party guests, ginger kids, and sugar plums.
