High Country Weekend Family Events June 26 – 28

The weekend is here! Rain is in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, but Sunday will be beautiful with sunshine and low 70 degree temperatures. You can start the weekend with Family Fun on Beech Mountain, heading out on the Twilight Hike, and/or enjoy one of the summer concerts. There are many great family events happening all weekend. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled family weekend!

June 26:

1. Beech Mountain Family Fun –

Pickleball open play at Beech Mountain Club (courts free; paddles $2/hour) – 9-11:00am

Disc golf at Beech Mountain Resort (free with own disc) – 12:00-5:00pm

Guided tour of old Land of Oz property & yellow brick road* ($10) – (IMPORTANT: Must be 36 inches tall to ride chairlift; click to view chairlift regulations)

Buck-a-Thon Running/Walking Fundraiser at Buckeye Rec Center – 2pm-7pm

Kids’ Cool Popsicle Relay at Buckeye Rec Center (free) – 4pm-5pm

A Taste of Beech food experience at Buckeye Rec Center ($5) – 5pm-7pm

Mini-golf special at Brick Oven Pizzeria (buy one, get one free) – all day

Swim/relax at Beech Mountain Club’s outdoor pool complex (free) – 3-6:00pm

2. Tweetsie – Stroll down Tweetsie Railroad’s Main Street and say howdy to the Marshal and the Cowboys. Visit the shops and the eateries. Along the way you’re sure to meet lots of interesting folks … and maybe a few outlaws, too.

3. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

5. Our Rocky World Kids Workshop at Blowing Rock Art & History Museum – Ages 5-8

Hold the treasures of the Earth in your hands and learn about the rock cycle with this rock & mineral ID lab. Experiments will teach young geologists how to test the properties of minerals and identify basic rocks. Each camper will receive a free guest pass to the Colburn Earth Science Museum in Asheville, NC.

Space is limited. Registration is required.

6. Jones House Summer Concert this week will feature Songwriter Showcase with Andy Ferrell, The Moon and You, Trevor McKenzie, and Mare Wakefield

Concert begins at 5 pm. Bring blankets or lawnchairs to sit on and an umbrella in the event of rain.

7. Music in the Valle – The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park begins Friday, May 22nd, 2015, and continues each Friday evening through September 11th. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale. May 22 – August 14 concerts begin at 7:00PM. August 21 – September 11 concerts begin at 6:30PM.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 9. Horn in the West OPENS! – Since 1952, America’s oldest Revolutionary War Drama has thrilled over one million audience members. Loved by old and young alike, “Horn in the West” is located in the Daniel Boone Park in Boone, North Carolina. A special discount is being offered to all Watauga County Residents for the Friday and Saturday night show. All Wataugans with proof of residency (NCDL or utility bill with address) will be admitted for $10!

10. Twilight Hike at Grandfather Mtn State Park

Appropriate for ages 8 and up; children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Please no pets.

Join a park ranger to explore the lower Profile Trail in the twilight hours. We’ll hope to see and hear nocturnal wildlife and enjoy the woods in that special time of the day. We’ll walk one mile, round trip. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. Closed toes shoes are highly recommended.

The Profile Trail is located on Highway 105 South; 1/2 mile north of the Highway 184 intersection

June 27:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner
