High Country Weekend Family Events March 20 – 22

It is officially Spring as of 6:45pm EST on March 20th! It looks like Saturday will be a beautiful day to be outside. There are lots of exciting family activities this weekend. Let’s see what is happening this weekend. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled family weekend!

March 20:

1. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 Tuesday-Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

3. Children’s Playhouse Parent’s Night Out – Kids have a blast with wonderful ASU volunteers while parents enjoy a night out. Cost for nonmembers is $15 for the first child, $8 per additional sibling; members pay $12 and $6. The 2014-2015 Parent’s Night Out at The Children’s Playhouse are 5:30-8:30 pm on January 30th, February 20th, March 20th, and April 24th. Call 828-263-0011 to sign up.

4. Family Movie Night at Greenbriar Theater – Jurassic Park showing at 7:00 pm in the Greenbriar Theater, 2nd floor Plemmons Student Union. All showings are at 7:00 pm with cartoons showing 20 minutes prior.

March 21:

1. All-You-Can Eat Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s in Boone – The High Country Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA) in conjunction with Applebees Restaurant is having a pancake breakfast at the Applebee’s restaurant 2036 Blowing Rock Road in Boone on March 21, 2015 from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Breakfast menu consists of All-You-Can-Eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and a hot drink. Donations are $7.00 per person and all profits go to support military personnel including local ROTC students at ASU, Jr. ROTC students at Watauga and Avery High Schools and the “Blue Star Mothers of the High Country” supporting troops overseas and high country military dependents left behind.

3. Easter Celebration at Boone United Methodist Church – Join in from 10:00 to 11:30am for an Easter Celebration through a powerfully moving, multisensory outreach event that guides participants along Jesus’ footsteps during his last days on earth. During this engaging self-guided walk through, all ages will journey through five stations and participate in impactful activities as they Travel to Jerusalem for Palm Sunday, Sit down for the Last Supper, Pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, Discover the sacrifice of Good Friday, and Celebrate freedom from their sins at the empty tomb that first Easter morning. Don’t forget your Easter basket as the church will continue their tradition of Hunting for Eggs, rain or shine! Contact childrensminister@booneumc.org with questions.

4. Make Crayon Resist Cards at Michael’s Craft Store: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

5. Family Day: Turchin Center for the Visual Arts – Families are invited to celebrate winter and anticipate spring with the Turchin Center! Free art activities like face painting, temporary tattoos, drawing, tile decorating, flower-making, collage and a book reading will be held throughout the galleries. Participate in a scavenger hunt through the galleries and be entered to win a prize bundle filled with kids art supplies! The prize drawings will be held at 2:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm.

6. “Winter Tree ID – Do some forests look like just a bunch of brown twigs in winter? Learn some basic tips for identifying hardwood trees without the benefit of their leaves. Meet at the trailhead parking lot on Saturday, March 21st at 1 p.m. For more information or for travel conditions to and within the park, please call 828-297-7261.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. March 22:

Sunday Matinee $4 for everyone!

2. Winter Tree Identification Hike at Grandfather Mountain State Park – 1:00PM-2:00PM – Appropriate for ages 10; children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Please, no pets.

Participants will learn how to identify local trees without the aid of leaves by learning differences in bark, limb, bud and branching patterns. Participants are encouraged to bring field guides to local trees. Program will last approximately two hours and hike 1 mile (2 miles round trip). Hiking boots are recommended. This is an outdoor event and those in attendance should come dressed for the current weather conditions.
