High Country Weekend Family Events March 4-6, 2016

March 4:

Sledding_hill_Beech_0141. Beech Mountain Sledding Hill – The popular youth sledding hill in the Town of Beech Mountain is open daily. The hill provides free sledding for children 12 and under.
The sledding hill is located next to the Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce on Beech Mountain Parkway in the heart of Beech Mountain.

It’s operated by the Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department and open seven days a week (weather permitting) with safety personnel on duty. A loud speaker plays music and hot chocolate is available at nearby restaurants.

Plastic sleds are required. Folks may bring their own, or sleds are available for purchase at nearby stores on the mountain.

Parking is available across the street near the Brick Oven Pizzeria, while restrooms are available in the Visitors Center/Chamber. People are encouraged to call (800) 468-5506 for hours of operation and to receive live updates on sledding conditions.

Children, ages 7 -12
Donor: $20 for each four-week session or $55 for 12 sessions; Non-donor: $30 for each four-week session or $85 for 12 sessions

Participants will explore color, design and texture through paint, markers, Cray-pas, collage, found objects and pen. Each week will feature a new activity that will develop skills and allow students to creatively explore the world around them: basic book making, drawing, sculpting with paper and found objects, painting (landscape and still-life), cartooning and more.

All materials are supplied.

4. Make a Potted Cactus at Michaels – They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included.

5. App State Mens and Womens Basketball Games – Women play at 1:00pm and Men play at 3:30pm. Saturday is the last game of the regular season.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every SaturdayF evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 4. Art Hike –  2:00pm: Join a ranger on a one mile easy hike on the Beech Tree Trail and see some beautiful nature art along the way produced by ASU students and some local members of the community.

5. $10 Sunday Night 1/2 Night  at App Ski Mtn – Ski or Ride for only $10 on the first Sunday of each month

Normal 1/2 night session is from 7:30 – 10pm, purchase online and get an extra hour FREE!
