High Country Weekend Family Events March 6 – 8

Wednesday was a sneak peek of Spring! Hope everyone was able to enjoy the warm weather. This weekend will not be as warm as Wednesday, but it will bring lots of sunshine. Don’t forget to move your clocks forward before you go to bed Saturday night. What is happening this weekend in the High Country for families? We wish you all a wonderful weekend!

March 6:

1. App State Blazing Easels: Native American Art – 3:00-4:30pm “Native American Pouch”: Design a Native American bag or baby papoose using simple weaving and decorate with beads and feathers.

2. Free Sledding at Beech Mountain – This sledding hill attracts people from all over the Southeast. We are lucky to have it in our backyard for free of charge for children 12 and under. Adults are allowed to sled with their small children. The hill is situated right beside the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce.

3. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 Tuesday-Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

March 7:

1. Wee-Cycle Spring Children’s Consignment Sale – 8:00am – 6:00pm A biannual children’s consignment sale in Boone, NC, offering high quality children’s items to our community.

Wee-Cycle was born out of our concern in recycling children’s clothing within our community. There is a goldmine of recyclable items in each of our homes. Our idea is to offer a cheaper path to children’s fashion and more while tapping into Boone’s green consciousness.

2. Free Sledding at Beech Mountain and a “Frozen” Family Fun Day – A day on the Free Sledding Hill building snow creatures and enjoying music from Frozen. Guests can come dressed as Frozen Characters. Prizes will be awarded and free hot chocolate will be served. Sledding is from 9am to 5pm. The “Frozen” event will be from 10am – 12pm.

4. Make a Windsock at Michael’s Craft Store: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

5. “Salamanders – Join a Park Ranger on Saturday, March 7 at 1 pm to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a PowerPoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park. For more information or for travel conditions to and within the park, please call 828-297-7261.

7. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public.
