High Country Weekend Family Events May 13 – 15, 2016

Happy Weekend! It’s going to be a weekend with lots of sun. Hope you will enjoy the family events all around the High Country including Watauga County School’s Family Fun Festival on Saturday. Please see full details below. Have a wonderful family weekend!

May 13:

1. Family Movies {Now Playing}

2. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

3. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. May 14:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. In addition to the areas best selection of local produce, foods, and crafts, there will be live music, cooking demos, children’s activities (Kid’s mini-Market and the seed planting station), and the unbeatable community atmosphere that has made the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!”

3. Get Crafty at the Ashe County Library – 10:00am: A-B-C Animals. Choose an animal to crochet, and choose whether to keep it for yourself, give it to someone you love, or donate it to a local organization. Beginners welcome!

4. String Art at Michaels – They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

5. Healthy Kids Day at the Williams YMCA – 11:00am-2:00pm: Bring the whole family to the Y’s Healthy Kids Day at Newland Town Park! This is a FREE event for the whole family! There will be inflatables, face painting, games, crafts, snacks and lots of resources to keep your family active and healthy this summer!

6. Family Fun Festival at Watauga High School – 1:00pm-5:00pm: The Family Fun Festival is a benefit for the eight Watauga County Extended Learning Centers at each elementary school and the Holiday/Snow day program at Hardin Park.  Free events and services will be provided by our community partners including Boone Police with their K-9 unit, ID truck, Bike Patrol, and possibly an SBI BearCat Tactical vehicle, Boone Fire Department, Watauga Library, N.C. Forestry Service, and many others. Tickets will be sold at $1.00 each for carnival activities indoors conducted by the after school programs. Carnival activities provided by each after school will go directly to that program. The events for each school are: Bethel- Face painting/tattoos, Blowing Rock- Photo Booth, Cove Creek- concessions, Green Valley- bowling, Hardin Park- Corn hole, Mabel- Lollipop Tree, Parkway- Bouncy House/Balloon animals, and Valle Crucis- cake walk. There will be an art contest, science exhibition, and talent competition in the auditorium, as well as live music. There will also be silent auction items including an autographed Panthers football, ands many raffle baskets with tickets at just $1.00 each.

7. Tree ID Hike at Grandfather Mountain State Park – 4:00pm – 6:00pm: Ever wonder the species of all those trees?  Now you can know! Grandfather Mountain is home to an amazing diversity of trees inhabiting a multitude of natural communities.  Join a Park Ranger for a short hike and learn what species are found along the trail.  The Hike will take 1-2 hours and will cover no more than two miles.  This is suitable for all ages.  Please leave pets at home, wear hiking boots and dress for the weather.   Please contact the park office with any questions.  828.963.9522 or email: grandfather.mountain@ncparks.gov
