High Country Weekend Family Events May 29 – May 31

Can you believe it is the end of May? It doesn’t seem possible! There are lots of great family events happening. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled weekend!

May 29:

1. WeeCycle Summer Consignment Sale – Dates: Now – Monday, June 1st

Time: 10am – 6pm M-F, 8am – 6pm Sat., Sunday 12 Noon – 5pm
Location: 200 Den Mack Road, Boone NC

Wee-Cycle Children’s Consignment, LLC is a biannual children’s consignment sale in Boone, NC, offering high quality children’s items to our community.

2. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

3. Family Movie Showings: Regal Boone Cinema and Parkway TheaterNow showing: Disney’s Tomorrowland

4. Tweetsie – Tweetsie Railroad is open for another exciting season filled with Wild West adventure for the whole family.

5. Music in the Valle – The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park begins Friday, May 22nd, 2015, and continues each Friday evening through September 11th. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale. May 22 – August 14 concerts begin at 7:00PM. August 21 – September 11 concerts begin at 6:30PM.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. May 30:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner – LettuceLearn comes to the Kids’ Corner with their Plant Parts Photo Booth.
Are you a root, leaves, stem, flower or fruit? Also play an edible plant game.

3. Watauga County Emergency Fest – It is serious fun for the entire family and it is free!

This event is an educational and fun event for children and adults of all ages. Some activities offered will be a children’s bike rodeo, a scavenger hunt, bounce house, live house burns, law enforcement demonstrations, fire trucks, ambulances, many types of law enforcement vehicles and equipment.

There will also be a bomb disposal demo as well as an auto extraction demo.

6. High Country Classic Car Club Cruise-in Benefit for Ryan Hartley – Mack Brown Chevrolet will host the cruise-in. This cruise-in is to help with the medical expenses of Ryan Hartley, a native of Watauga County.

This past February, Hartley was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He spent several weeks at N.C. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem and is currently in the middle of a six-month series of treatments.

Entertainment will be provided and food by Big Mo’s Barbecue will be available for purchase, with a portion of the sales donated to the Hartley family.

A 50/50 raffle will also be held, with 50 percent of the proceeds donated to Hartley.

7. Make a DIY Paper Fan at Michael’s Craft Store: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

9. Blowing Rock Recreation Pool – Enjoy the public swim from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm. Click here for more details.

10. High Country Dance and Music Festival – Join High Country Dance Studio and lots of other local talent for the first ever High Country Music & Dance Festival!

Tickets are $7 and are available for purchase at the gate. Bring a pack of diapers for Who Needs a Change? of the High Country and your carload receives admission for $5 each!

11. Honey Bear Campground Family Drive-In Movie – Bears! The movie starts at dusk…. Around 8:30. Check in at our office to purchase you car parking pass! Only $5.00 a car load so load em up!

4. “Basic Orienteering Skills” at Grandfather Mountain State Park – GPS units seem to be the new way of navigation for most people but with so many factors that can cause GPS units to be incorrectly read or used it’s nice to know how to use a basic compass and map. Join Ranger Sicard at Grandfather Mountain State Park to learn the basics of using a compass and map and how they are important even with all the technology we have available to us today.
