High Country Weekend Family Events October 7-9, 2016

The High Country will be seeing rain most of the day Friday and part of Saturday. Right now, Sunday looks to bring lots of sunshine. You may want to hold off on going to the corn maze until Sunday. There is several fall festivals planned for this weekend! Check out all the events and plan your weekend of family fun!

October 7:

1. Corn Maze Fun – Have a blast getting lost in a corn maze with your family. Three locations in the High Country. Check out full details of each location here.

2. Family Movies {Now Playing}

3. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

4. Hardin Park Fall Festival
Where: Hardin Park Elementary
Festival from 5:00-8:00pm. There will be games, food vendors, raffles and MUCH more!

5. Green Valley School Fall Festival – 5:00pm-8:00pm: please join in for chili, cornbread, nachos and cheese, and brownies. It will be a fun night of air rides, cake walks and a silent auction.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 7. Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad – 7:30 pm Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train® Halloween Festival will return this weekend. With a variety of things to see and do, Ghost Train offers safe Halloween fun and adventure for the whole family.

October 8:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. Join in the market fun every Saturday morning through November. In addition to the areas best selection of local produce, foods, and crafts, we also have live music, cooking demos, children’s activities, and the unbeatable community atmosphere that has made us “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!”

3. Sugar Mountain Oktoberfest

Where: Sugar Mountain, NC

Over 40 artisan’s and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00am each day. A sampling of this year’s vendors include: chair canning, wooden toys, oil paintings, stain glass, handmade furniture, dolls, copper art, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, bird houses, and much more.

Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the mile and a half long chairlift ride to Sugar’s 5,300 ft peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift.

The children’s activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep the young ones entertained from noon until 5:00pm Saturday & Sunday.

Kids can enjoy hay rides, inflatable bounce houses, and a chance to meet Sugar Bear & Sweetie Bear. Cotton candy, popcorn, caramel apples, homemade cookies and drinks are also available in the children’s activity center. All ages are welcome to participate.

4. Todd New River Festival – 9am-5pm

Music (some of the best bluegrass in the High Country), crafts, family activities, moonwalk, rubber ducky race on the river, and more in the historic railroad boomtown of Todd.

5. Family Movies {Now Playing}

6. Michaels Craft Store – Kids Club® Clothespin Bats – 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

7. Leaf Lookers Hayride – 12:30pm-3:00pm Buckeye Rec. hosts their 2016 Leaf Lookers Hayride. The Hayride will begin at the Buckeye Recreation Center and take visitors through scenic Beech Mountain trails. In addition, hot apple cider and games will be provided. This is a FREE event so bring the whole family for a fun-filled Fall Adventure!

3. Boone Heritage Festival – 10am-4pm

Where:  Daniel Boone Park/ Hickory Ridge Living History Museum (Next to Horn in the West)

The Boone Heritage Festival is a friend- and fund-raiser for Hickory Ridge Living History Museum. There will be music, baked goods, basketry, historic crafts, kettle corn, and more! The festival is presented by The Southern Appalachian Historical Association  and the Town of Boone.

4. Sunday Concert atop Beech Mountain – Every Sunday in October from 6-9 pm. Serenaded by local Blues and Jazz artists Shane Chalke and BE Jazz at the Alpen Restaurant, located within the Beech Alpen Inn.
