July Weekend Events: In The Heat Of The…Summer! 07/09-11

It’s the middle of the summer already and boy have we been experiencing the heat! Here are some weekend activities that will get your mind off of the warmth, but light your fire of enthusiasm. From Celtic games and music, to the good ole sounds of Bluegrass, to “How’d They Do That” Acrobatics and scoring great deals at the Arts and Crafts Show, these events are sure to stimulate your mind and body, putting you right smack dab In The Heat Of The…Summer!


The 55th annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans is this Thurs., July 8th, through Sun., July 11th, right up on Grandfather Mountain. Don’t miss all of the fun with “heavy athletics, a Celtic rock concert, the Scottish Country Dance Gala, marathon and more”. 4-day passes for adults are $55, and children’s are $25. Tickets per day may also be purchased and Shuttle service is provided between MacRae Meadows and satellite parking areas in Linville, Newland and Boone. Crestwood Inn will continue its summer Outdoor Film Series showing Sixteen Candles at dusk Friday, July 9th, on the Crestwood Inn lawn. Bring a blanket or chair, or you can rent a chair. For those who go, get a 10 % discount coupon for food at the lounge on select nights. Look out Nashville, Here comes the 13th annual Music Fest ‘n Sugar Grove this Fri. & Sat., July 9th – 10th, at the Historic Cove Creek School grounds in Sugar Grove. Doc Watson, the Kruger Brothers, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops are no strangers to the High Country and are nationally recognized performers of Bluegrass and the good “Old-Time Music”. You won’t want to miss hearing them on stage this weekend, along with up-and-coming talents such as the Snyder Family Band and Trevor McKenzie. Plan to arrive a little early to make sure to get all of the action. Tickets are $20 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Kids 12 and under are admitted free with an accompanying adult. Appalachian Summer Festival presents the Golden Dragon Acrobats this Sat., July 10th, at 8 pm in Farthing Auditorium. The 38th annual Lees-McRae College Alumni Arts and Crafts Show takes place this Sat. July 10th to July 18th in the Cannon Student Center. Free and open to the public, the show is open 9:30 am – 4 pm Mon. – Sat. and 1 pm – 4 pm on both Sundays.  Almost 30 vendors will be there this year selling pottery, woodworking items, jewelry, pillows, wooden bowls, paintings, crocheted items, ceramics, stained glass, mosaics, floral arrangements and more.
