June Weekend Events: Joyful June Days 06/04-06

End of School days and Graduations are just a couple of the events that June is known for,  and here in the Boone area is no exception. Everyone has such hectic schedules and going here and there! But, just as Barb says in her recent posts, it is time for picnics and relaxing, and all that brings joy to these June days! Here are some activities to usher June in just right.

This Friday and Saturday, June 4th – 5th, the WNC Shriners  and Members of the Oasis Shrine, will hold their Summer Ceremonial in Blowing Rock for the 2nd year inducting new members into the Shrine. To kick things off, there will be a free concert by the Oasis Band Fri., at 3 pm in the Memorial Park. Then the Ladies of the Shrine will have a special Luncheon and Fashion Show at Chetola Resort Sat., at 11 am, followed with an afternoon parade on Main Street. Also beginning on Fri., June 4th – Sun., June 13th, is Tweetsie Railroad’s Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine, where you can enjoy the day, take in a 25-minute ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, and meet Sir Topham Hatt. To ride with Thomas, advance tickets are required and are $32 for adults, $22 for children and free for children 2 and under. Tickets may be purchased online or by phone. Saturday starts off with the 4th annual High Country Kids Triathlon held by the Watauga County Parks and Rec Dept. in Boone at 10 am. Three age groups can participate and include: age 8 and under, 9 to 12 and 13 to 18. Each group will swim, bike and run varying distances, with Relays also available. Prizes and refreshments will be offered, and all proceeds will benefit Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Next on Sat., June 5th, is IMPACT Kids Day Festivals hosted by the United Methodist Churches of Watauga County. The 1st festival is for all children of incarcerated adults, birth – 8th grade, and their families held at Hardin Park School’s gym and playground (on N.C. 194 in Boone, near New Market Centre). The activities start at 9:30 am until 12 noon with hayrides, an air walk, bean bag toss, basketball, other games, and free refreshments, held rain or shine. The 2nd Festival is for all special needs children, birth – 12th grade, and their families held at Boone United Methodist Church’s Family Life Center and Courtyard (at 471 New Market Blvd. in Boone, around the back of the church building). Activities begin at 9 am until 12:30 pm with hay rides, Bingo, farm animals, balloons, bean bag toss, basketball, other games, and free refreshments, held rain or shine. Deer Valley Racquet and Fitness will host an Open House Sat., June 5th, from 9 am – 6 pm, see Sarah’s story. There will be lots of fun activities such as swimming, a kids’ tennis carnival from 1 – 3 pm, fitness classes, food, disc golf, indoor basketball, racquetball, yoga, pool and ping-pong. A mat pilates class will be at 10 am, followed by a cardio camp class at 11 am. These events and activities are free, and all kids must be supervised by an adult. Lastly, the Boone Service League and local photographer Emily Angle will offer spring pictures for their Spring Pictures Fundraiser this Sun., June 6th – Tues., June 8th. Sessions will be offered Sun., from 1 – 6 pm and Mon. & Tues., June 7th & 8th, from 10 am – 12 pm and 3 – 6 pm. Each package is $60 and includes 1 8×10 print,2 5×7 prints, and 8 wallet prints.
