October Weekend Events: Family Fun, Fall Festivals and Fanfare! 10/ 15-17

What an exciting time of year this is! This Autumn season seems to be more glorious than ever and the deep, rich, vibrant colors so beautiful. I thought last year was awesome, but this year tops that for sure! If you haven’t been out to see the colors, this weekend is the peak for the leaves turning I am sure, if not last weekend. Temperatures are suppose to be a littler cooler this weekend just in time for enjoying the events going on up here in the High Country.

This weekend has lots of happenings sure to bring out the “kid” in all of us! We have BBQ, Festivals, Pumpkin Parties, the famous Valle Country Fair, having some Fun in the Park, a Scarecrow Run, and a little celebration about a wooly creature…you know, it’s the Wooly Worm Festival!

So come one, come all, and bring your family and friends out to enjoy some Family Fun, Fall Festivals, and lots of Fanfare!

It’s a Fall Festival Fundraiser, put on by Greenway Baptist Child Development Center, this Fri., Oct. 15th from 5pm-9pm. Come out and help support them with lots of Activities for the Kiddos, Live Music and a Silent Auction followed by a BBQ Chicken and Hot Dog dinner. Tons of fun for the whole family!

You won’t wanna miss the annual Playhouse Pumpkin Party & Consignment Sale, Playhouse Pumpkin Consignment Sale“a great chance to start your Christmas shopping”. And with all the great kids’ clothes, furniture, books, household items, antiques, and more, it’s a great place to start. Held at the National Guard Armory in Boone, Fri., Oct. 15th for a $5 “Hunting License” you can start with the Early Bird Sale for 1st dibs from 8:30am – 1pm.  Saturday’s Pumpkin Party is free to get in from 8:30am – 1pm with lots of not-too-scary indoor Halloween fun perfect for little ones, including the always popular air walk, Halloween crafts, and trick or treating. All rummage and most of the consignment items will go to half-price starting at noon. For more info call 828-263-0011.

Yeehaw, it’s the 32nd annual Valle Country Fair this Sat., Oct. 16th, from 9am – 4pm held at the Valle Crucis Conference Center grounds. The huge “overgrown church bazaar” attended by more than 10,000 people last year is sponsored by the Church of the Holy Cross and the Valle Crucis Conference Center. The event features 135 Arts & Crafts booths, Food including fresh Apple Cider and Butter, and Live Entertainment. All profits go to local charities and admission is free with parking $5 per car. Join in for the annual Relay for Life Fall Scarecrow 5K Run/Walk this Sat., Oct. 16th  on the Greenway Trail in Boone.  Registration is $20 per individual and $45 per family, with  Packet pickup and race day registration beginning at 7:30 am under the picnic shelters at Clawson-Burnley Park, across from the National Guard Armory. Pre-Registration is encouraged and all preregistered participants will receive a t-shirt, and cash prizes will be awarded to the overall male/female and overall masters male/female winners. Age group winners will also be recognized. All proceeds benefit the Watauga County Relay for Life. For more info call Paula Ward at 828-297-4876.

Make lots of memories at the 4th annual Fun in the Park Day this Sat., Oct. 16th from 10 am – 2 pm, co-hosted by the Public Utilities Office and the Public Works Office, held at the Boone Jaycees Park on Horn in the West Drive. The theme for this event is “Green is Keen,” and features 3 giant Bounce Houses and Slides, Face Painting, Balloons, Paint Sheets, Games, Tattoos, Stickers and more. Also, the Children’s Council will be on hand with Crafts, Bubble-making and other activities, and the first 50 children will receive a free t-shirt or water bottle. Reusable Grocery Totes will be given away and drawings will be held throughout the day for various door prizes. This event is free and open to the  public. Lastly, come on out for the 33rd annual Woolly Worm Festival, held at the Banner Elk Elementary School, Sat. & Sun., Oct. 16th -17th, from 9am – 5pm on Sat. and 9am – 4pm on Sun.  The only festival where a racing Wooly Worm is the highlight with a $1000 prize on it’s head, more than 23,000 people come out to take part. As the Wooly Worm races to predict the coming winter weather, they race all day for this 2-day event with the Championship race held Saturday at the end of the festival.

At the Woolly Worm Festival, co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk and the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, there is lots of great Food, a Woad Wace, Live Entertainment, 140 Arts & Craft vendors, 1,000 worm trainers and national media crews coming to Banner Elk each year. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids ages 5 to 12 and free for those under 5. Tickets will be sold at the gate. For more info call the Avery Chamber at 828-898-5605 or visit www.woollyworm.com.
