October Weekend Events: Happy Halloween Happenings! 10/30-31

Halloween pic 3Happy Halloween to everyone! What an exciting time of Halloween Dress-Up with your favorite costumes, Trunk or TreatingHarvest and Fall Festivals, and of course Judgement House! We are in for an incredibly Hair-Raising, Freaky, and Spooktacular time of events and happenings this weekend. There are so many things going on it will be hard to choose, but whatever you do, you and your family are guaranteed to have a “Fun-tastic” time!

For your Friday night, our 1st kick-off event is the Greenway Baptist Church Fall FestivalFall basket decor held at the church’s Child Development Center in Boone on Friday, October 30th from 5-7 pm with games, a silent auction, cake walk, chili cook-off, candy, face painting, food and fun. Mt. Vernon Fall FestivalOur 2nd event is the annual Fall Festival held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church on Friday, October 30th, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm.  This year’s theme is Crocs, Heroes and Cowboys where “The Wild West will meet Heroes Unmasked to wrestle some crocs from the bayou,” a spokeperson for the church said. “This all-fun, no-fear Bible adventure will be an evening packed with carnival games, free candy, food, and more than enough fun and laughter to keep you smilin’ for days. There will be games for kids of all ages, including a special section for preschoolers.” My kids have always had a fun time attending this Fall Festival!

Thirdly, this is a 6-night event,  Howard’s Creek Baptist Church’s very own “Judgement House picJudgement House”. The church is located at 240 Howard’s Creek Church Road in Boone. “A Judgement House is a true-life drama played out in a series of rooms. It tells the storyJudgement House of several individuals and the choices they make that change their lives forever,” a spokesperson for the event said. Judgement House will be presented by members of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church and other area churches. The dates are: Friday, 10/30  6-9:30 pm; Saturday, 10/31  5-9:30 pm; Sunday, 11/1   4-8:30 pm; Friday, 11/6   6-9:30 pm; Saturday, 11/7   5-9:30 pm; and Sunday, 11/8  4-8:3pm. While Walk-ins are always welcome, the church recommends calling 828-264-1908 to make reservations for large groups. Judgement House is something Not to be missed!

For a second dose of “Howling” good times, Saturday, October 31st, Halloween, has quite a few happenings to offer. Here are a few events to get you going.

Ghosts, ghouls and goblins hit the streets of Downtown Boone for the 9thDowntown Boo! annual Downtown Boo!!, which takes place on Saturday, October 31. The fun begins at 2pm at the Watauga County Library for scary story telling, songs and activities for kids, then a parade to the Jones House at 3pm, followed by Trick or Treating with the merchants in downtown Boone taking place until 5pm. All participating businesses will have balloons and streamers, with maps being provided so that all candy or treats get picked up. For more information, call 828-262-4532.

There’s also the Fall Festival picsHalloween Festival at Historic Cove Creek School October 31 taking place from 3 to 6pm on Saturday, at the School gym. This is for all ages and activities include a costume contest, games, food, a cakewalk and more. A Haunted House for ages 10 and up will take place from 7 to 10pm, and all events are fundraisers for the nonprofit Sugar Grove Developmental Day School. Don’t forget to attend the Bl Rk Halloween picBlowing Rock Halloween Festival October 31 in downtown Blowing Rock, from 3 to 9pm for anBlowing Rock Parks and Rec 2009 afternoon of nonstop fun with hayrides, airwalks, games, a scavenger hunt and the Monster March Costume Parade. There’s also Trick or Treating with the local merchants designated by orange and black balloons. Prizes awarded for best costumes and scavenger hunt winners. Admission is free, and don’t forget to bring a flashlight. For more information, call 828-295-5222. Spooky times!

Last on our list is Trunk or Treat pic 2the 5th annual Trunk or Treat in Banner Elk on October 31st where little goblins and ghouls, along with their parents and friends, are gathering at Tate-Evans Park from 5:30 to 8pm. This year’s event, sponsored by the Avery County Arts Council andTrunk or Treat pic 3 Kiwanis International, features a “bigger and better” Haunted House and loads of candy for trick-or-treaters. Admission is free, and discounted hot dogs and roasted corn will be available for purchase at the event. For more information, call 828-898-8395.

  1. FRUGAL MOM TIP: Sort your kids Halloween candy into 2 piles: theme packaging and standard packaging. Let them eat the theme packaged candy first. Put the others away for Christmas stockings!!! (Don’t forget to stash a few piece of chocolate in your purse, first.)
