September 12th – 14th High Country Weekend Events!

What is happening this weekend in the High Country for families? DOLPHIN TALE 2 hits theaters! This is just one of the great family activities happening this weekend. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled family weekend!

September 12:

1. Regal Cinemas in Boone – Now showing: DOLPHIN Tale 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy.

2. Blazing Easels Kids Workshop at ASU Turchin Center – Each Friday students will learn a new art skill! These one-month sessions focus on three different cultures. Students will complete projects that are relevant to the themed culture for that session. All supplies included.

3. Free Friday Concerts on the Lawn at the Jones House – Local Traditions Showcase – Starting at 4:00 p.m. w/ – Charlie Glenn, Glenn Bolick, Lonnie Ward, Mary Greene, Strictly Strings and Rick Ward

September 13:

1. Watauga County Farmers’ Market – Join us for the 40th anniversary season of Watauga County Farmers’ Market! The farmers’ market has been Boone’s Town Square since 1974. Opens at 8:00am in the Horn in the West parking lot.

2. 44th Annual Girl Scout Day (Grandfather Mountain)

9am-4pm: All Girl Scouts and troop leaders are admitted free with proof of membership. Discount admission for other family members. Staff naturalists provide free nature programs throughout the day. Click for full schedule.

3. Lowe’s Build and Grow – 10:00am at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Boone, Banner Elk and West Jefferson. Your child will love building and playing with these binoculars. Sign them up today!

4. Elk Knob Headwaters Community Day – Enjoy a day filled with live music, games, nature activities, hikes, wagon rides, craft and cultural demonstrations, hands-on activities, history and FOOD! Please bring a dish of food to share and join us between 11 am and 5 pm for our 10th Annual Elk Knob Headwaters Community Day sponsored by the Elk Knob Community Heritage Organization (EKCHO, Inc.). Enjoy a day of cultural heritage and pride. Please note that if you are interested in participating in the potluck, you should bring a dish of food to share and plan to be at the park by noon.

5. Regal Cinemas in Boone – Now showing: DOLPHIN Tale 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy.

6. Elk Knob Nature Hike – 2:00pm Come out for a beautiful nature hike and learn about the natural history of the area. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. Meet at the trailhead parking lot. Program is weather dependent.

7. The Shining Seas Revival – A Celebration of the Waters in puppets, poem and song – Produced by Star of the Sea Studios held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

The Shining Seas will feature many puppets from the original show
plus a host of new water creatures – including a dashing octopus, sinister angler fish and undulating sea centipedes!

The show will feature our core troop of puppeteers Alistair Burke, Cindy Tate, Kathy Ford, Marcia Alayon, Tori Cox, Veronica Toub, Zan Valliant.

20% of the ticket sales will benefit Appalachian Voices a great local organization raising awareness around nature issues and particularly in September regarding WATER concerns! Tickets: Adults $10 and Children $7.

September 14:

2. Sunday Concert in the Park – Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy FREE entertainment at the gazebo in Memorial Park in Blowing Rock. The American Legion Hall is the backup venue in case of inclement weather. Concert begins at 4:00pm.
