September Weekend Events: Happy Labor Day, 3-Day Weekend Here We Come! 09/03-06

Happy Labor Day! Woo Hoo, September is here and this weekend has lots going on! Thus begins the days of “there’s so much going on, I don’t know how I’m going to choose” days with the Fall season looming on the horizon. This weekend’s activities are no exception and brings excitement to the air! We’ve got great Music, Art, the season’s 1st Fall Festival, a Beer Fest, flying Kites, inspirational Concerts, some high-speed Racing action, and fun at a beautiful park and lake. A veritable cultural explosion for your palette, and all on a 3-day weekend! What more could we ask for?

Enjoy some tunes with Jimmie Griffith, the composer, singer, and guitar player of Banana da Terra, will be performing at Green Mother Goods Fri, Sept. 3rd, from 6 – 8 pm for the Downtown Boone Art Crawl. Performing his Brazilian-style solo project, MaisCéu, the family-friendly event will feature free organic coffee and light refreshments. C‘mon out to Heritage Day at the Banner House Museum in Banner Elk is this Sat., Sept. 4th from 11 am – 4 pm, part of celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary. The free event will feature Guest Speakers, Live Music, House Tours, and free Hot Dogs. Museum tours are $5 for adults and $1 for kids. Our 1st Fall Festival of the year at Boone Baptist Church on Sat., Sept. 4th from 1 – 6 pm. Festivities will include an Air Walk, Pumpkin Toss, Cake Walk, Raffle, Silent Auction, Pie Eating contest, and much more. The 5 o’clock hour will feature a BBQ supper, with donations graciously accepted. The church is located at 1886 Deerfield Road in Boone, and proceeds will go to the youth for mission projects and activities. For more info call 828- 262-1772.

Be a part of the 3rd annual High Country Beer Fest, Sat., Sept. 4th, from 3 – 7 pm held at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The event is expected to sell out, but you can still get advance tickets for $25 online at www.hcbeerfest.com, or at Peabody’s Beer and Wine in Boone or in Banner Elk at Erick’s Cheese and Wine, with tickets at the gate being $30 . Find your Treasure at the last Fine Art & Craft Show before summer is over in the High Country, hosted by owner Pat Fay and Mountain Top Promotions this Sat. & Sun., Sept. 4th & 5th at the Banner Elk Elementary School field. With Free admission and parking, the show will be open from 10 am – 5 pm on Sat., & 10 am – 4 pm on Sun., featuring Furniture, Handbags, Rocking Chairs, Pottery, Jewelry, Photography, Handmade Rugs, Glasswork and more. Go way up with the 8th annual Mile High Kite Festival this Sun., Sept. 5th, from 10 am – 4 pm at the top of Beech Mountain next to the Brick Oven Pizzeria. This is a Fun, Free event, and free kites will be given to the first 200 children under 12 in attendance. A variety of kites will be sold, but you can bring your own, with contests being held to determine the biggest, smallest and best-decorated kites. For more info call 828-387-9283.

Get your inspiration on with the High Country Praise Festival, Sun., Sept. 5th at the Holmes Center at ASU from 3 – 8 pm. Hosted by Son’s Light Ministries, this year’s line-up features nationally known recording artists The Afters, Fireflight, and 7 – Miles. Kirk Cameron, (from TV show Family Ties) will deliver the message, and Appalachian State University’s head football coach Jerry Moore and wide receiver Blake Elder will also be speaking. There will also be an outdoor concert and inflatables (weather permitting) at 3 pm. Doors will open at 3:30 pm, and admission is $5. AND, on Labor Day,

Rev up those motors at the North Wilkesboro Speedway Labor Day Classic , Mon., Sept. 6th as the Speedway will host a 200-lap feature. Legends Donnie and Bobby Allison will return to the speedway as Grand Marshals, and gates will open at 7 am with practice at 9:30 am. The green flag for the Labor Day Classic is at 2 pm. Finally, enjoy some swimming fun at the Summer Closing Celebration at Wildcat Lake in Banner Elk, Mon., Sept. 6th, from 10 am – 6 pm hosted by The Grandfather Home for Children and the Edgar Tufts Memorial Association. Enjoy free Hot Dogs, Snacks and drinks served from 11am – 1pm, with Children’s games such as relay races and line dancing from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Lifeguards will be on duty.
