Tasty Tuesday: Planning for the 4th of July

When I was growing up, some of our best parties happened on the 4th of July. We’d grill hamburgers or hot dogs, drink pop from cans, eat gallons of fresh fruit salad, have watermelon seed fights, play in the pool and get totally sunburned. I learned from my mom two very important things about preparing for the 4th of July (or any summer picnic for that matter):

1. Keep it simple.

2. Keep it plentiful.

This is not the time for fancy dishes or fiddly, time-consuming recipes. Especially if we’re having a cookout or a picnic, we all just want to be outside. The best way to make sure that happens is to plan ahead and that’s what I’m doing this week.

In the interest of keeping things simple, I’m going to stick with hamburgers on the grill, fruit salad, sweet tea (instead of soda pop) and enough seeded watermelon to have seed fights! (This is a great time to head over to Stickboy Bread Co. to grab some of their great hamburger buns–their Bread of the Week this week!)

Here are a few other summer picnic favorites of ours that I MIGHT make:

Summer is awash is delicious fresh produce and this particular holiday is the time to take full advantage of it. Most of these dishes can be made ahead of time which is an important factor in preparing for a fun, casual picnic. Really…even if it’s tempting to let this get complicated, this is one party you just want to keep as basic as possible.
