New River Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K, and Kids Run May 7th

The inaugural New River Marathon, Half-Marathon & 5K will be held on May 7, 2011 and will showcase the scenic and serene New River Valley nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Northwestern North Carolina.

New River Marathon LogoThe New River Marathon courses primarily along the banks of the South Fork New River, one of only 14 American Heritage Rivers in the United States. Of the 17 miles with pastoral vistas of the New River, 13 miles are along Railroad Grade Road, a North Carolina Scenic Byway. For the 9 miles that wind away from the flat and fast New River Valley, the course offers several short, aggressive climbs, rolling country roads, and a challenging 2-mile section between 15.5 and 17.5 miles (the near 180 degree view at mile 17.5 is breathtaking).

The venue for the start/finish is graciously hosted by the family-owned Riverside Restaurant, which sits on the banks of the New River. This National Register of Historic Places building is the former herb and root warehouse for Brownwood and surrounding communities of Todd and Fleetwood. Family and friends will not only enjoy the start and finish of each race, but can cheer the marathoners at Mile 11 of the figure 8 course.

“The course for each event, the marathon, half-marathon, and 5K was designed from a runner’s perspective. We wanted to offer a scenic, predominantly flat course, but with a taste of the mountains, a course that the novice and experienced marathoner will enjoy,” smiles Ken Sevensky, race co-director. “What started as a desire to showcase the spectacular scenery of the New River Valley is growing into an event that is being embraced by the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce and Ashe County community.”

The New River Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K received notice that the marathon course was awarded certification by USA Track and Field (USATF). This certification has two implications notes race director Ken Sevensky:

  • First, runners know that the marathon course complies with the strict criteria of USATF.
  • Second, and perhaps more important, the New River Marathon is officially a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. Based on age, runners must achieve the time standard established by the Boston Athletic Association in order to be considered for entry into the Boston Marathon, which is held every April.

The New River Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K are organized and directed by Blue Ridge Endurance, LLC. For additional information please visit www.NewRiverMarathon.com or call 336-877-8888.

Watauga Swim Team 5K/Fun Run Benefit

Did you know that Watauga County has a Swim Team with over 50 members? Over the years, I have known many kids who’ve participated in the Watauga County Swim Team, and it is wonderful for their fitness, as well as achievement and self esteem.

The Mom Squad would like to share a message from the Swim Team about their upcoming fundraiser, and why they even need a fundraiser!  (and you guys know it is my dream to have a decent indoor/outdoor pool facility for our community!)

—————————————————————————————————-

We would like to invite you to participate in Watauga Swim Team’s 1st Annual 5K/Fun Run Benefit!

Date: Saturday, May 1, 2010Watauga Swim Team 5k
Time: 8am registration, 9am race begins
Place: Greenway Trail
Cost: $20 preregistration, $25 race day (Registration forms can be found on our website. Payment and registration cost can be mailed to WST – P.O. Box 2506 in Boone, NC 28607)
Event: We will have a 5K (3.167 miles) race (all ages and walkers welcome) and a 1-mile fun run for our younger runners.

We have some AMAZING gifts for all participants and LOTS of door prizes as well! There will be great prizes for our age category winners from the generosity of our local businesses!

Come and support our county swim team. The funds we raise will be used to encourage children from Watauga County to learn and compete in the fun sport of swimming while learning self-discipline, sportsmanship, strength and commitment. Teaching children to swim is a life-long sport and a life-saving skill. Currently, we have over 50 members.

All proceeds go to the Watauga Swim Team.

Your registration for this event goes further than just the event itself though. It serves to support our team for its ongoing operating expenses.

Swin Team Fun Run 5kWatauga Swim Team is a non-profit organization that relies on its member dues and fundraisers to support our coaches’ salaries, facility fees and equipment costs.

Most swim teams are supported by facilities that are capable of hosting swim meets in their home areas. These meets serve as large revenue sources for those teams.

At the current time, Watauga County does not have the facility for us to host our own swim meets.

SO, we need you to come out and run with us!

Run on down and support your Watauga County Swim Team on May 1, 2010 at Greenway Trail!
