Deals on Snow Days at Area Ski Resorts for Students and Teachers

When school closes and you have the proper transportation, you may want to take advantage of the great deals at the area ski resorts.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

Appalachian Ski Mtn. offers special Snow Day rates to students, teachers and staff of all public and private preschools, elementary schools, and high schools when schools are canceled or released early due to snow or inclement weather. Snow Day rates apply to schools in Watauga County and the following adjacent counties: Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Johnson (TN), and Wilkes.

Use code SNOWDAY2020 to activate this special rate for a Flex Ticket, or LOCALSNOW2020 to activate the 9am-5pm ticket on our Online Reservations Platform. Pricing will be reflected on final cart review page of checkout.

If school is rescheduled for Saturday attendance or rescheduled on a Holiday, and canceled due to snow, Snow Day rates do not apply. Snow Day rates apply to tickets and equipment rental sold between 8:30am and 4:00pm. Snow Day rates are not sold for night sessions.

College students are only eligible for the Regional Snow Day Flex Ticket when classes are cancelled for winter weather. Regular rental rates apply to college students.

Students should present a report card or other school ID from one of the listed counties. Teachers and Staff should present a pay stub or other employment identification. Home-school students may present a home-school authorization letter from the NC Department of Non-Public Education along with a parent’s driver’s license confirming the specific county residency. Home-school teachers do not qualify for Snow Day rates.

If there is a snow day called this season, and you can get out of your neighborhood safely, then you may want to enjoy a family day at App Ski Mtn!

Any time any school system in NC, TN, SC or VA is out of school due to winter weather, students, teachers and school staff from that school system can purchase an 8-hour Flex ticket for only $10! Simply present a report card, school ID or paystub for teachers and staff to take advantage of this great offer. The Flex ticket is an 8-hour ticket, and your time starts when you purchase your ticket. This includes Colleges that are out for winter weather as well. (Individual class cancellations do not qualify.) Regular rental rates apply.

Carolina Snowbelles Ice Skate Fundraiser

Mark your calendars for an evening of family fun on the ice skating rink at App Ski Mtn!

App Ski Mtn is hosting a fundraiser for the Carolina Snowbelles to help with the group’s expenses for their upcoming performance in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center.

Join the precision dance troupe at the Appalachian Ice Arena on Friday, December 7 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Skating is only $10/person and includes skate rental.

App Ski Mtn Opening Day November 22, 2016

Dust off your ski boots. It is time to hit the ski slopes thanks to below freezing temperatures and snow in the weekend forecast. Appalachian Ski Mtn.’s 55th season is now tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 22, weather permitting! Per their website, snowmaking crews will be standing by waiting for temperatures to drop on Saturday. Snowmaking should be ongoing as temperatures allow Saturday night, Sunday day & night, and Monday.

To celebrate the start of a great season, the first 100 guests to the Ticket Cashier Window will receive a FREE ski ticket!

The sledding hill is located next to the Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce on Beech Mountain Parkway in the heart of Beech Mountain.

It’s operated by the Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department and open seven days a week (weather permitting) with safety personnel on duty. A loud speaker plays music and hot chocolate is available at nearby restaurants.

Plastic sleds are required. Folks may bring their own, or sleds are available for purchase at nearby stores on the mountain.

Each week will feature a new activity that will develop skills and allow students to creatively explore the world around them: basic book making, drawing, sculpting with paper and found objects, painting (landscape and still-life), cartooning and more.

5. App State Mens and Womens Basketball Games – Women play at 1:00pm and Men play at 3:30pm. Saturday is the last game of the regular season.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every SaturdayF evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 3. Build a Snowman Contest – Be sure to grab the family, your winter gear and join the fun for Beech Mountain’s annual snowman building contest. The contest takes place on the sledding hill on February from 10am to 12 pm. There will be plenty of snow for everyone. You are encouraged to bring props for your snowman and let the creativity fly! Here is a picture of last year’s winner in the “most creative” category.

4. Make a Valentine’s Arrow Card at Michaels – Drop in for Kids Club from 10-noon on Saturday, where Kids will make a Valentine’s Arrow Card. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative, craft fun – supplies included!

5. Elk Knob State Park (Winter Edibles) – 2:00 p.m. When snow is on the ground and the trees are bare, how do all those non-hibernating animals get by?  How did humans get by, especially if their stores of food ran out or went bad?  There are sources of nutrition and medicinals year round if you know where to look.  Come find out.  Program will be outdoors, weather permitting, but will be indoors otherwise.
