High Country Weekend Family Events August 12-14, 2016

We have a great list of family events for your enjoyment. Rain has been seen every day in the High Country since August 1st. The rain is supposed to back off this weekend with ample sunshine. Check out all the events and plan your weekend of fun.

August 12:

1. Family Movies {Now Playing}

2. Wee-Cycle Fall Back to School Sale – 10am-6pm: Name brand and Boutique brands in sizes 0 – 12 Children’s Clothing, sizes 0 – 5 Childrens Shoes, Accessories, Dance-wear, Costume & Dress up, Furniture, Equipment, Games, Books, Toys, Electronics, Maternity, and so much more. Shop Local and support our community!

3. Family Pool Time: Robbin’s Pool at Broyhill Park in Blowing Rock – Public Swim Times: 11:00am-5:00pm and 6:00pm-8:30pm

4. Music in the Valle – Concerts begin at 7 p.m. from May 27 until August 12. August 19 through September 9, concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a chair or a blanket, a picnic, and lots of friends! Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the Park per person is recommended.

5. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. August 13:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. In addition to all the wonderful produce and products, coffee, cookies, and camaraderie, biscuits, breakfast pizza, and baked goods, seeing friends and swapping lies, the Farmers Market has lots of fun activities.  Nate Harris will be performing on Center Stage, and on side stage, the talented Marshall Daniels will be playing the handpan (looks a lot like a UFO or a wok!) and the hammered dulcimer.   Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture will be having a cooking demonstration to teach us how to convert fresh veggies into delectable delights.  Folks from High Country Recreation will provide information about recreation in the high country and also be selling athletic t-shirts.   (There will be no Kid’s Corner this week.)

3. Used Homeschool Curriculum / Book Sale – 9am-1pm at Mt. Vernon Baptist Chuch, 3505 Bamboo Road Boone, NC 28607 Lots of used curriculum, educational toys, novels and children’s books. Cash only. To sell items, contact jclefinch@yahoo.com.

4. Lowe’s Build & Grow Kids Clinic – 10:00am: Free workshop at Boone, Banner Elk, and West Jefferson locations. This week’s build:

6. Michaels Craft Store – Kids Club® Summer Memories Book – 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

7. Family Pool Time: Robbin’s Pool at Broyhill Park in Blowing Rock – Public Swim Times: 11:00am-7:30pm

8. Appalachian State Fan Fest – Begins at 5:30 p.m. with an EXCLUSIVE half-hour window for members of the Junior Mountaineer Kids Club and their parents to get autographs with their favoritASU Fan Feste Appalachian State football student-athletes and coaches before the gates open for the general public.

5 p.m. — On-site registration for Junior Mountaineer Kids Club
5:30-6 p.m. — Exclusive autograph with Appalachian State football student-athletes and coaches for JMKC members only
6-7 p.m. — Gates open for the general public

 

August 14:

4. Genesis Wildlife Program – Genesis Wildlife Center will have a wildlife program from 12-4 on Sunday, August 14th at their site just past the Buckeye Recreation Center on Pine Ridge Road. The public will be able to see several rescued birds of prey and snakes and learn more about nature on Beech Mountain. Free.

5. Sunday Concert in Blowing Rock Park – bring a chair or blanket and enjoy FREE entertainment at the gazebo in Memorial Park in Blowing Rock. The American Legion Hall is the backup venue in case of inclement weather. Concerts begin at 4:00pm. Silvio Martinat Swing Band
