High Country Family Events July 31 – August 2

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

2. Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, Hunter-Jumper 1 and II – See riders take their steeds through the courses! In addition to the highlight events from the past, the Kathryn G. Clark Challenge of Champions, the Russell Hall Jumper Classic, the USHJA International Hunter Derby and the L.P. Tate Jumper Classic, we are introducing several new Classics including Pre Green Incentive Classics both weeks and Classics for Children, Adults, Ponies and Juniors. Increased prize money for the professional hunter divisions. Cash only admission. Kids 12 and under are free!

3. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseMake the ultimate summer souvenir at The Children’s Playhouse in the month of July. We make it easy by stocking everything you need. Take home your special t-shirt home and leave the mess here! We will have adult and children’s sizes on hand.
Cost: $7 per shirt for members, $12 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children’s Playhouse). Bring your own shirt and dye it for $4. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

4. Passport to Imagination at Michael’s – Join us on an imaginary road trip from the beach to the county fair and beyond, with fun kids’ crafts at each stop. Today’s craft: Make Believe Camera. $5.00 per session or 3 for $12. Supplies included.

7. Jones House Summer Concert this week will feature Swing Guitars and Jon Stickley Trio

Concert begins at 5 pm. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on and an umbrella in the event of rain.

8. Music in the Valle – The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park begins Friday, May 22nd, 2015, and continues each Friday evening through September 11th. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale. May 22 – August 14 concerts begin at 7:00PM. August 21 – September 11 concerts begin at 6:30PM.

9. Shrek the Musical – Come out and support our local theater. It will be a fun show for all ages. The shows will be at 7 pm on July 30 and 31 and 2 pm on Aug. 1. Tickets cost $14 for adults, $12 for seniors 55 and older, and $10 for kids ages 12 and younger.

10. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 11. Horn in the West is Open! – Since 1952, America’s oldest Revolutionary War Drama has thrilled over one million audience members. Loved by old and young alike, “Horn in the West” is located in the Daniel Boone Park in Boone, North Carolina.

12. Outdoor Movie Night at Valle Crucis Park – Movie is Wreck-It Ralph. Concessions will be available for purchase. Come and enjoy a special evening under the stars!

August 1:

5. Craft Time at Michael’s (Kid’s Club Rain Stick) – 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

Summer Sunday Sunset Concert: Beech Mountain – Join us at the Gazebo next to Fred’s General Mercantile on Beech Mountain at 6:30 PM pm Sunday evenings for a great music series featuring folk, bluegrass and community bands. The K-9s In Flight Frisbee®  Dogs will jump right into the heart of guests when the group of incredibly talented rescue dogs visits Tweetsie Railroad July 18-26, 2015. These gravity-defying canines will entertain the whole family with non-stop, action-packed performances daily at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Also catch their shows during special 7:00 p.m. performances during Tweetsie’s Cool Summer Nights event on Saturday, July 25. All shows are included in regular admission to the park.

7. App State Football Poster Giveaway – The event will occur locally in Boone outside of The TApp Room over lunch from 11:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.

In addition to receiving a complimentary football poster, fans will also have the opportunity to register for the Junior Mountaineer Kids Club and Football 101/201 and purchase 2015 Appalachian State football season tickets at each stop of the poster giveaway tour. Appalachian State athletics staff members will be in attendance at each stop and Mountaineer coaches and/or student-athletes will be on hand for pictures and autographs

8. High Country Pet Fest – The Annual High Country Pet Fest is a community-wide event that celebrates pets and the families who love them. The Banner Elk TDA, The Avery County Chamber of Commerce and My Best Friend’s Barkery proudly host the festival with proceeds from this event to benefit local animal-related charities. This year’s 2015 High Country Pet Fest will incorporate lively entertainment and educational opportunities for pet owners. We have partnered with the Southeast Disc Dogs, who will be holding their disc dogs competition here in Banner Elk for the first time on July 24 & 25. other planned exhibitions include the working dogs of the Avery County K9 unit and a Search and Rescue team, educational seminars by local veterinarians and other local pet professionals, the Blessing of the Dogs and a concert by one of our local favorite bands, The Whip Daddys with Madd Dog. Enter your dog into the ever popular High Country Dog Show, and a variety of vendors! Have your dog try out the latest AKC dog sport, Barn Hunting or test their dexterity at Swift Paws lure coursing. The event will take place on July 24 & 25th at the Historic Banner Elk Elementary School grounds.

3. “Salamanders” at Elk Knob Park – Join a Park Ranger on Sunday, July 26 at 2 pm to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a PowerPoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park. Afterwards we will see if we can find any out in the park. Meet at the Elk Knob State Park Office.

5. Watauga Community Band Summer Concert – The Watauga Community Band will perform at the Rotary Gazebo in Blowing Rock Park, Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 4pm. The band, under the direction of Steve Frank, will play a variety of pieces, including music by the Beatles, Broadway show tunes, television and movie themes, and Americana. There is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy! The concert is free, and all are welcome to attend.

The Preserve and the Foundation welcome you to the “Highlight of Blowing Rock’s Summer Season”. The Hunter & Jumper horse show will be from July 21 – July 26 and July 29-August 2 at the L. M. Tate Horse Show Grounds.

This will be a fun summer activity for High Country families. Children 12 and under get in free! All other guests can purchase a ticket for only $10 per day. This ticket will allow you to come and go as you like.

A variety of food options on the grounds and a unique collection of vendors provide an unforgettable dining and shopping experience. Items such as jewelry, clothing, gift items, beautiful photographs and original one-of-a-kind paintings (some completed as you watch) are elegantly displayed by serious quality-minded merchants and craftsmen.

You can enjoy a spectacular display of the finest show horses in the country as they chase the silk and silver of the “Oldest Continuous Outdoor Horse Show In America”. By attending the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, you will be helping maintain a beloved institution and supporting many worthy charities.

High Country Weekend Family Events June 5 – 7

June 5:

1. 92nd Annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show – Presented by the Blowing Rock Horse Show Foundation, the event includes the Saddlebred Competition June 4-7, Hunter-Jumper I July 21-26 and Hunter-Jumper II July 29-August 2. The action takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show is the oldest continuously running horse show in the eastern half of the United States and regularly attracts riders and their horses from all over the country. Day Out with Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015 – Little engineers everywhere are invited to join Thomas when the #1 Engine pulls into Blowing Rock for Day Out with Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015!  The event, which takes place June 5-14, 2015, will be hosted by Tweetsie Railroad. Thomas the Tank Engine rides depart every 30 minutes, rain or shine. Departure times begin at9:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. each day of the event (park open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).  Tickets for Day Out With Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015 are $41 for adults and $27 for children ages 3 through 12. 4. The 34th Annual New River Canoe Race – will take place on June 6th, 9 am. All proceeds go to support Friends of High Country State Parks’ mission to support our state parks.

The event will begin at Zaloo’s Canoes in Jefferson, NC and travel five miles to the Wagoner Road Access of the New River State Park. This route is calm with no white water.

Boats can enter the water from 9 am to 1:30 pm.
Please note boats with children need to be in no later than 1 pm.

Registration is $10 per person, $5 for children, and $25 for family float (up to 6 people) for a single race. Every additional race is $5. Registration includes a FREE T-shirt and entry for a door prize.

Enter with a Canoe or a Kayak. Bring your own boat or rent one at a discounted price from Zaloo’s Canoes. Zaloo’s will provide free shuttles. This is a family friendly event with options to enter as a “Novice”, “Expert”, or “Championship Category”. The “Special” category is for those with any special needs.

Music, free food samples, tubing, swimming, or hiking can all be found at New River State Park until the 3pm Awards Ceremony. You do not have to race to enjoy these fun activities! Food from local food trucks will be available.

5. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

6. 2nd Annual Spring into Summer ArtsFest – Celebration of the arts in Watauga County. There will be paintings, pottery, crafts, fiber arts, and jewelry on display, as well as a silent auction, music on the porch from 11am to 4pm, demonstrations and interactive arts and kid activities. The event is free and open to the public and there is free parking across Shadowline Drive. ArtsFest is sponsored by Watauga County Arts Council and Potters of the Blue Ridge. 7. Make a DIY Father’s Day Card at Michael’s Craft Store: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

10. Street Dance at Town Hall (Beech Mountain Visitor Center) – Dancers and non-dancers alike will love the old-fashioned street dances on Beech Mountain! A sand dance floor is made in the parking lot in front of town hall and chairs are set out for spectators. Music is provided by a DJ or small local band. Dances take place from 7-9 pm. There’s no charge. Directions.

11. Honey Bear Campground Family Drive-In Movie – “The Muppets Most Wanted“! The movie starts at dusk…. Around 8:30. Check in at our office to purchase you car parking pass! Only $5.00 a car load so load em up!

June 7:

1. 92nd Annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show – Presented by the Blowing Rock Horse Show Foundation, the event includes the Saddlebred Competition June 4-7, Hunter-Jumper I July 21-26 and Hunter-Jumper II July 29-August 2. The action takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show is the oldest continuously running horse show in the eastern half of the United States and regularly attracts riders and their horses from all over the country. 2. Day Out with Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015 – Little engineers everywhere are invited to join Thomas when the #1 Engine pulls into Blowing Rock for Day Out with Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015!  The event, which takes place June 5-14, 2015, will be hosted by Tweetsie Railroad. Thomas the Tank Engine rides depart every 30 minutes, rain or shine. Departure times begin at9:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. each day of the event (park open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).  Tickets for Day Out With Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2015 are $41 for adults and $27 for children ages 3 through 12. Children 2 and under are admitted free.
