Beech Mtn Announces Fall Outdoor Activities

We live in such a beautiful area to enjoy the outdoors. Fall is no exception. Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation has announced its fall lineup of outdoor activities.

Also as a reminder, Beech has two canoes and a kayak that you can reserve to enjoy a beautiful outing on their Buckeye Lake. Reserve your date and time here. There is no charge.

Tweetsie Railroad Halloween Festival

When: September 21–22, 28-29; October 5-6, 12-13, 19-20, 26-27

Where: Boone/Blowing Rock, NC
Ghost Train rides, haunted house, black hole, 3-D Maze, freaky forest, face painting, clogging, spooks, and other such Halloween mischief. Safe Family adventures. Best bet is to purchase tickets in advance.

Where: Haunted Horn’s Family Friendly Event

During the Daniel Boo! hours (6:00-7:30 pm), guests of all ages can come enjoy some spooky, no-so-scary fun. Both children and parents alike can play fall-inspired games, win prizes, wander through the Wacky Woods on an interactive scavenger hunt, and much more! Also new this year is Witch Craft, a beer garden featuring local breweries.

Sugar Mountain OktoberFest

When: October 13-14, 2018; 10AM-5PM

Where: Sugar Mountain, NC

Over 40 artisan’s and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00 am each day. A sampling of this year’s vendors includes: chair canning, wooden toys, oil paintings, stain glass, handmade furniture, dolls, copper art, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, birdhouses, and much more.

Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the mile and a half long chairlift ride to Sugar’s 5,300 ft peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift.

The children’s activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep the young ones entertained from noon until 5:00 pm Saturday & Sunday.

Kids can enjoy hayrides, inflatable bounce houses, and a chance to meet Sugar Bear & Sweetie Bear. Cotton candy, popcorn, caramel apples, homemade cookies, and drinks are also available in the children’s activity center. All ages are welcome to participate.

Happy weekend! After two rain-filled weekends, we will see sunshine in the High Country this weekend. There are several awesome fall festivals happening so head out and have lots of family fun.  See all the family-friendly events below:

8. Tweetsie’s Ghost Train – Named as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, a ride on the Ghost Train is just the beginning. Take a stroll through the Freaky Forest and encounter dark surprises along the way. Visit the Boneyard and find your way through a 3-D Maze, a disorienting Black Hole and a mystifying Warp Tunnel. Or check out Tweetsie’s Haunted House, where 13 frightening rooms await brave visitors that dare to enter.

9. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 5. Avery County Agricultural and Horticultural Fair – There will be Pig Wrangling, Petting Zoo, Cupcake Wars, Mechanical Bull, Heritage displays and demonstrations that include a cider press, soap making, candle making. A garden tractor pull will be on Saturday.

7. University of Zululand Choir members to perform at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone – he choir sings a variety of compositions, from Afro gospel, jazz and soul to traditional, indigenous music and opera. They are winners of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 National Champions in Arts and Culture choir competitions, and hold additional honors.

3. Blazing Easels Kids Workshop at ASU Turchin Center – Each Friday students will learn a new art skill! These one-month sessions focus on three different cultures. Students will complete projects that are relevant to the themed culture for that session. All supplies included.

4. Chick-fil-A Family Fun 50’s Night – 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Chick-fil-A of Boone, come dressed in your 50’s attire and enjoy the evening! Twist the Balloon Man will be there along with Classic Cars, the Chick-fil-A cows and a photo booth. All children will receive a FREE small coke float!

7. Hickory Ridge Living History Museum, located on the grounds of “Horn in the West,” is an eighteenth-century living history museum highlighting the daily lives of our mountain ancestors. See live demonstrations of a various pioneer skills, such as hearthside cooking, flintlock rifle, blacksmithing, spinning and weaving, etc. Open Saturday mornings, May – October, and evenings before “Horn in the West,” Tues. – Sun., mid-June through mid-August. Admission to the museum is by donation.

8. Turchin Center Family Day Celebrating South Africa – 1:00 pm: The Turchin Center continues to celebrate the culture of South Africa through art activities with Family Day!
