High Country Weekend Family Events October 21-23, 2016

The High Country will be getting a taste of winter this weekend. Bundle up and enjoy getting lost in a corn maze. It’s just one of many memories to be made this weekend. Check out all the events and plan your weekend of family fun!

October 21:

1. Corn Maze Fun – Have a blast getting lost in a corn maze with your family. Three locations in the High Country. Check out full details of each location here.

2. Family Movies {Now Playing}

  • Ghostbusters at App State’s SuperCinema – 7:00pm and 9:30pm ($1 per ticket if purchased in advanced or $2 at the door)

3. Appalachian State Homecoming Parade – 6:00pm Pack up the family and head over to enjoy the 2016 Appalachian State University Homecoming Parade. The parade will take place at 6:00 p.m. The parade will travel through the campus of ASU and along King Street in downtown Boone.

4. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 5. Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad – 7:30 pm Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train® Halloween Festival will return this weekend. With a variety of things to see and do, Ghost Train offers safe Halloween fun and adventure for the whole family.

6. Steely Pan Steel Band in Concert {Free} – 8:00pm Concert goers will be treated to compositions from Trinidad’s Panorama competition and local fan favorites as well. Director Byron Hedgepeth said, “We are adding some Panorama tunes that haven’t been performed for a few years and three songs written or arranged by former members of the band.” The lively “Birthday Party” by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe opens the performance. Sharpe was considered a child prodigy of the steel pan. Written in 1992, “Birthday Party” won second place in a Panorama competition. Arrangements of “Glory,” “Under the Sea” and “Whey de Pan Man” by former Steely Pan director Scott Meister also will be performed. Jonathan Scales’ arrangement of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from the Disney cartoon “The Lion King” also is on the program.

October 22:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. Join in the market fun every Saturday morning through November. In addition to the areas best selection of local produce, foods, and crafts, we also have live music, cooking demos, children’s activities, and the unbeatable community atmosphere that has made us “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!”

3. Family Movies {Now Playing}

4. Michaels Craft Store – Kids Club® Yarn Ghosts – 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

5. Appalachian State Homecoming Game – Mountaineers vs. Idaho Vandals: Kick-off at 3:30pm

2. Sunday Concert atop Beech Mountain – Every Sunday in October from 6-9 pm. Serenaded by local Blues and Jazz artists Shane Chalke and BE Jazz at the Alpen Restaurant, located within the Beech Alpen Inn.
