High Country Weekend Family Events November 20 – November 22

Did you hear we may get our first snowflakes of the season? This will be great news for ski slopes as they may be able to start building a good base. The first Christmas parade for the area will be this weekend in Ashe County. ‘Tis the Season! We wish you all a wonderful and happy-filled weekend! See all the family-friendly events below:

November 20:

1. Christmas at Apple Hill Farm  Now through Sunday, December 13, the farm will be offering mini-tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Christmas at Apple Hill FarmSundays from 10am to 4pm.

The farm store is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm for all your gift shopping needs.

Join in for a tour of our working alpaca farm where you can meet our alpacas, llamas, goats, donkeys, chickens, and more! After your tour, stop by our farm store to warm up with some homemade hot chocolate while you browse our farm store. You can even pick up a hand-tied wreath or locally grown table top tree.

The Apple Hill Farm Store has been turned into a one-of-a-kind Christmas store with a wide selection of alpaca yarn, socks, scarves, blankets, and teddy bears, as well as a unique collection of locally made gifts and Christmas items for the people on your list.

2. Annual Book Sale Watauga Public Library – This sale will be held in the Library and will feature a large selection of books as well as Holiday gift baskets for the holiday. Prices range from 25 cents to $ 2.00 for most books. Books make great presents for your friends as well as a great treat for that special friend ( yourself). So plan to come by, as always plenty of free parking.

4. Blazing Art Workshop – 3:00pm to 4:00pm: Children’s art workshop at Appalachian State University. Colombia’s Fernando Botero: Animal Paper Mache: Make an animal sculpture in the style of artist Fernando Botero.

5. 101 Dalmatians! 7:00pm: The Valle Crucis Playmakers present this fun play for all ages. The dangerously stylish diva, Cruella De Vil gets into some furry mischeif when she spots the inspiration for her new fur coat: One Hundred and one Dalmatians! The Valle Crucis Playmakers have worked hard putting this show together so buy your ticket today. You won’t be sorry!

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. November 21:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! –  9am – 12pm The unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974” will be open through November.

6. Light up the town! (West Jefferson)  Come to Downtown West Jefferson on Saturday, November 21 for the Holiday parade at 3 pm and stick around for the Annual Light up the Town event beginning around 5:30 pm! The Downtown will be lit at dusk with lighted displays and decorations. Businesses will be all decked out for the Holiday season for all to see! Many businesses will also have extended hours to start your Holiday shopping early. Food specials & live music at our downtown restaurants. Also visit stores for chances to win prizes!

7. Grace Academy Chili Cook-Off – 5:00 pm at Watauga High School. Tickets are $6.00 per person/$30.00 max per family in advance or $8.00 per person/$30.00 max per family at the door. Call Grace Academy at (828) 773-7830 or contact via email at graceacademychili@gmail.com to get your tickets in advance. There will be a limited number of tickets sold at the door. Your ticket buys a family fun night, two bowls of chili, drink, bread, and dessert per ticket. There will also be numerous items for our Live Auction, Silent Auction, Children’s Raffle, and a Cake Walk. This is an event for the entire family! There will be something for everyone!
