High Country Weekend Family Events September 30-October 2, 2016

We are experiencing cooler temperatures in the High Country. The leaves are starting to show their beautiful array of colors. We have a great list of family events for your enjoyment. Check out all the events and plan your weekend of family fun.

September 30:

1. Corn Maze Fun – Have a blast getting lost in a corn maze with your family. Three locations in the High Country. Check out full details of each location here.

2. Family Movies {Now Playing}

3. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

4. Parkway Elementary Fall Festival
When: September 30, 2016; 5:30pm – 8:00pm
Where: Parkway Elementary
JUMP!, Cotton Candy, Pop Corn, Cake Walk, Silent Auction, Face Painting and More!

5. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 6. Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad – 7:30 pm Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train® Halloween Festival will return this weekend. With a variety of things to see and do, Ghost Train offers safe Halloween fun and adventure for the whole family.

October 1:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. Join in the market fun every Saturday morning through November. In addition to the areas best selection of local produce, foods, and crafts, we also have live music, cooking demos, children’s activities, and the unbeatable community atmosphere that has made us “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!”

3. Family Movies {Now Playing}

4. Michaels Craft Store – Kids Club® Mashup Mask designed by Sprout  – 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

5. App State vs. Georgia State Football Game – The second season begins for Appalachian State (2-2) this weekend as conference play arrives. The Mountaineers practiced briefly on Sunday and had Monday off as preparations begin for Saturday’s Sun Belt Conference opener against Georgia State. Kickoff is at noon on American Sports Network and ESPN3.

6. Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad – 7:30 pm Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train® Halloween Festival will return this weekend. With a variety of things to see and do, Ghost Train offers safe Halloween fun and adventure for the whole family.

October 2:

3. Mushrooms at Elk Knob State Park – Learn a bit about fungi and test your skills on a mushroom hunt with fungi guru Julie Mullis Sunday, October 2 at 2 pm.  Meet at the park office.

4. Fall Colors at Grandfather Mountain State Park – 2:00pm: Did you know you can predict what color leaves the trees will change to during the fall season? When you see trees during the summer months in their lush green stages of growth typically you do not think about what color the leaf will become in the fall. But what if you could? Join Ranger Sicard to learn about the process which makes the trees’ leaves change to the colors they do, and how you can predict what colors you will have where you live.  Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.  For more information, please contact us at 828-963-9522 or grandfather.mountain@ncparks.gov.

5. Sunday Concert in Blowing Rock Park – bring a chair or blanket and enjoy FREE entertainment at the gazebo in Memorial Park in Blowing Rock. The American Legion Hall is the backup venue in case of inclement weather. Concerts begin at 4:00pm. Silvio Martinat Swing Band
