Happier & Safer Halloween! – Teal Pumpkin Project!

What is the Teal Pumpkin Project®?

Teal Pumpkin Project® is a movement to raise awareness of food allergies and to create a safer, more inclusive Halloween for all trick-or-treaters. Putting a teal pumpkin on your doorstep will let trick-or-treaters know that your house is food allergy-friendly. This can mean that you offer non-food treats or trinkets, such as glow sticks or small toys, and/or that you have allergy-friendly candy which is free of the top 9 allergens (including sesame). This simple act allows kids to enjoy the same allergy-friendly trinkets or treats whether they have food allergies or not. Teal is the new orange, and we hope you will join us in painting Halloween teal. Getting started is easy:

  1. Provide non-food treats and/or allergy-friendly candy (free of the top 9 allergens, including sesame) for trick-or-treaters
  2. Place a teal pumpkin in front of your home to alert trick-or-treaters that you have a food-allergy friendly home
  3. Add your home to the Teal Pumpkin Project map
  4. Spread the word! Share the Teal Pumpkin Project® with your friends and family

Town of Boone Celebrates Annual Boone BOO w/ Teal Pumpkin Project!

The Town of Boone’s Cultural Resources Department is proud to present the 18th annual Boone BOO! on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

During Boone BOO!, the Jones House, the Watauga County Public Library, and downtown merchants will host a fun (and spooky!) Halloween celebration for everyone. During the event, King Street (from Appalachian Street to Waters Street) will be closed from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. to ensure pedestrian safety and to encourage a safe and fun trick-or-treating experience for all participants.

At 3:15 P.M., the Watauga County Public Library will kick-off the celebration with a spooktacular magic show by Twist the Balloon Man. After the magic show, the library will have arts & crafts and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture will host an apple-themed booth. Stop by to enjoy apple tastings (with more than seven varieties of apples), an apple peeling activity, and a cider press demonstration. At 6:00 P.M., the library will have spooky stories that will chill your spine with Tammy at 6:00 PM for ages 10 and up.

Starting at 4:00 P.M., the Jones House Cultural and Community Center will be transformed into a silly and spooky haunted house with plenty of tricks and treats for kids of all ages! On the lawn, you can enjoy a bounce house, games with Appalachian State athletes, and give-a-ways for children of all ages. Twist the Balloon Man will be at the Jones House to create amazing (and free!) balloon art.

From 5:00 – 6:00 P.M., the community is invited to trick–or–treat at participating downtown merchants. Various downtown merchants will also be handing out non-food treats for children with food allergies as a part of the Teal Pumpkin Project. These businesses can be identified by a teal pumpkin outside their doors.

We ask all Boone BOO! participants to be mindful and considerate of our younger participants when planning their costumes to help ensure a fun, family-friendly event for all.

For more information please call the Jones House at (828) 268-6280 or visit www.joneshouse.org.
