High Country Family Events for Labor Day Weekend

How can it be Labor Day weekend? The weather looks promising for the last “unofficial” summer weekend. Hopefully, you will be able to enjoy the extra long weekend. Enjoy many of the wonderful nature parks or pack a picnic to create memorable family time. Check out all the family-friendly events happening in the High Country this weekend below:

Beech Mountain Kite Festival

September 4:

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

2. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseCome spend quality family time exploring the art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 on Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

3. Blowing Rock Recreation Pool – Enjoy the public swim from 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

4. Downtown Boone First Friday – is September 4th from 6 – 8:30 pm.  Enjoy music at the Jones House Community Center followed by First Friday in downtown. Visit the shops, galleries, and restaurants for art receptions, complimentary refreshments, live entertainment, and free art demonstrations.  Click the link for a list of events happening this First Friday.

5. Music in the Valle7:00pm The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series at Valle Crucis Community Park. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended. Bring a chair or a blanket and a picnic, as food generally is not available for sale.

6. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. September 5:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner (Fall Veggie People)

2. Beech Mountain Family Kite Festival – Make lasting memories by participating in the 13th annual Mile High Kite & Craft Festival. The festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6, in the town meadow. Located at more than 5,000 ft. in elevation, the meadow makes it easy to sail kites more than a mile above sea level. Children of all ages are invited to fly a kite. Other activities include races with kids pulling parachute kites, face painting, and a variety of craft and food vendors surrounding the town meadow.

6. Appalachian State’s Home Football Game (Hall of Fame Game) – Saturday, September 5th- The first home football game for the Mountaineers. The game will be against Howard University and will be Hall of Fame Day. Tickets for the game can be found on the App State Athletics website. 7. Honey Bear Campground Family Drive-In Movie – “Home“! The movie starts at dusk. Check in at the office to purchase your car parking pass! Only $5.00 a car load, so load em up!

September 6:

3. “Web Weavers” at Elk Knob State Park – Spiders are something that many people fear but if you educate yourself about them, they are not as intimidating. Come learn about the different types of spiders that call North Carolina home and find out if your fear is really founded. Meet at the Park office at 2 pm for a PowerPoint presentation about our beneficial arachnids. Then we will head outside to see what we can find.

4. Beech Mountain Sunday Concert – Join in for the finale of Beech Mountain’s Summer Sunset Concert Series at the Beech Alpen Pavilion next to the Beech Alpen Inn on Sunday, September 6th for the Swing Set Big Band from 5-9 pm. Bring chairs or blankets. Free.

5. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available. Performance schedule coming soon.
