High Country Weekend Family Events May 15 – May 17

Despite some showers and thunderstorms in the forecast, I think we can make it an awesome weekend in the High Country. There are lots of great events happening. Kick-off your weekend by enjoying the Chick-fil-A Family Carnival Night. We wish you all a wonderful fun-filled weekend!

 

May 15:

1. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5:00 on Fridays.

2. Family Movie Showings: Regal Boone CinemaNow showing: Mall Cop 2

3. Tweetsie – Tweetsie Railroad is open for another exciting season filled with Wild West adventure for the whole family.

4. Chick-fil-A Carnvial Night – The fun includes: FREE cotton candy, circus games, photo booth, visits with the clown cow, and face painting. Circus night will start at 5:30pm and end at 7:30pm.

5. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. May 16:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market is Open! – The market opens with live music from local musicians, cooking demos from local food enthusiasts, activities in the kids corner, and the unbeatable atmosphere that makes the market “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!” Join PHARMN at the Kids’ Corner for tart with Seeds! Learn about starting seeds, how to plant a lettuce and herb bowl; start cucumber and squash seedlings to take home. We will plant the KC barrel with the Three Sisters — corn, squash and beans — to teach companion planting as Native Americans taught early settlers.

2. Blowing Rock School Spring Fling & Fun Run – Get up off the couch and get moving for Blowing Rock School!

The run starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 16th, at Blowing Rock School, and follows the Mayview-Laurel Lane route. The run finishes at the Memorial Park Gazebo.

All participants receive a T-shirt, and all proceeds go to the Blowing Rock PTO General fund.

The Spring Fling will be from 11:00am – 3:00pm and will feature food vendors, health & wellness events and more.

6. Make a Knotted Friendship Bracelet at Michael’s Craft Store: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

7. YMCA Healthy Kids Day – The Williams YMCA of Avery County is holding a FREE community event at the park in Newland from 11am-2pm to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, is the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families. There will be inflatables, music, games, fire trucks, food, face painting, martial arts and Zumba kids demos, summer camp information and sign-ups, and many local family resources and vendors. The first 50 kids will receive a free YMCA cinch back pack!

8. Family Fun Festival at Watauga High School – This festival will offer local families the chance to enjoy a great time while supporting the Extended Learning Center (ELC) afterschool program of the Watauga County Schools. The event, which runs from 1-5 p.m., will feature games for children, a bouncy house, representatives of community service agencies, a raffle offering dozens of items and services, science and talent competitions for children, live music, a DJ, and food and craft vendors on site.

9. Animals of Elk Knob State Park – A Park Ranger will be at the start of the Summit Trail sharing information about animals that live at Elk Knob. There will be skins to touch and taxidermied animals to view. This is an informal program which will be canceled in the event of rain.

10. Honey Bear Campground Family Drive-In Movie – Shrek! The movie starts at dusk…. Around 8:30. Check in at our office to purchase you car parking pass! Only $5.00 a car load so load em up!

3. Nature Hike at Elk Knob State Park – Come out for a beautiful nature hike and learn about the natural history of the area. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. Program is weather dependent.

4. Kids Gathering with theHeart – A special evening for kids to sing, worship, and play together. Families and friends are invited. Visit http://www.theheart.us for more information and directions.
