High Country Weekend Family Events September 23-25, 2016

Fall has officially arrived but it will still feel like summer this weekend in the High Country. We have a great list of family events for your enjoyment. Check out all the events and plan your weekend of family fun.

September 23:


1. Corn Maze Fun 
– Have a blast getting lost in a corn maze with your family. Three locations in the High Country. Check out full details of each location here.

2. Family Movies {Now Playing}

3. Music on the Lawn in Blowing Rock – 5:30pm: Free outdoor concerts every Friday evening, weather permitting! Enjoy classic country, blues, bluegrass, and other genres in an always-changing lineup. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

4. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 p.m. every Friday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 5. Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad – 7:30 pm Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train® Halloween Festival will return this weekend. With a variety of things to see and do, Ghost Train offers safe Halloween fun and adventure for the whole family.

September 24:

1. Watauga County Farmers Market – Join the market from 8am to noon. Join in the market fun every Saturday morning through November. In addition to the areas best selection of local produce, foods, and crafts, we also have live music, cooking demos, children’s activities, and the unbeatable community atmosphere that has made us “Boone’s Town Square Since 1974!”

4. Michaels Craft Store -Kids Club® Leaf Placemat  – 10:00am-12:00pm: They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

5. Lowe’s Build & Grow Kids Clinic – 10:00am: Free workshop at Boone, Banner Elk, and West Jefferson locations. This week’s build:

6. Fall Color at Elk Knob State Park – Come out and learn about the changing leaves and what significance they hold.  Meet 2 p.m. at the trailhead parking lot.

September 25:

3. Sunday Concert in Blowing Rock Park – bring a chair or blanket and enjoy FREE entertainment at the gazebo in Memorial Park in Blowing Rock. The American Legion Hall is the backup venue in case of inclement weather. Concerts begin at 4:00pm. Silvio Martinat Swing Band

High Country Family Weekend Events October 16 – 18

Happy weekend! It looks like we will see sunshine in the High Country all weekend. It will be very cool mornings. According to the Fall Color Report, this is peak week for the beautiful leaves. There are two big fall festivals happening so head out and have lots of family fun.  See all the family-friendly events below:

Tweetsie in Fall Leaves

October 16

1. Tweetsie – Bring the whole family out to enjoy Tweetsie fun!

2. Harvest Farm Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch – Come create a memory, get lost in our 7 acre corn maze, pick a pumpkin, take a hayride and have a picnic. Bring your spirit of adventure and a flashlight to explore our family friendly flashlight maze.

3. New River Corn Maze – The maze is OPEN! The team is excited to start their 6th year of business. The hours are Friday and Saturday 10am to dark and Sunday 1pm – dark. Come enjoy this beautiful weekend getting lost in all the fun at the New River Corn Maze!

4. Open Play Time at The Children’s PlayhouseCome spend quality family time exploring the art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 on Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

6. Blazing Art Workshop – 3:00pm to 4:00pm: Children’s art workshop at Appalachian State University. Draw a face from the Italian Renaissance.

7. Tweetsie’s Ghost Train – Named as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, a ride on the Ghost Train is just the beginning. Take a stroll through the Freaky Forest and encounter dark surprises along the way. Visit the Boneyard and find your way through a 3-D Maze, a disorienting Black Hole and a mystifying Warp Tunnel. Or check out Tweetsie’s Haunted House, where 13 frightening rooms await brave visitors that dare to enter.

Valle Country Fair: The Valle Country Fair is an overgrown church bazaar set in the center of one of the most picturesque valleys in the North Carolina mountains at the peak of the fall color season. All monies raised go to fund High Country organizations which serve people in need. Last year more than 10,000 people enjoyed:
* 135 juried fine art & crafts booths
* Freshly pressed apple cider
* Hot-out-of-the-kettle apple butter
* Homemade jams & jellies
* Brunswick stew, chili, barbecue

6. Woolly Worm Festival: Don’t miss this one of a kind festival where racing woolly worms is a highlight. A true predictor of the coming winter weather is the honor bestowed upon the winner of the final heat on Saturday. Woolly Worms are racing all day for this event with the Championship race held Saturday at the end of the festival close to the day’s end for the festival. You will find great food, a woad wace, live entertainment, and lots of arts and craft vendors. All proceeds are given back to the community to enhance schools, promote business, and tourism.

Cost: Admission $5.00 (adults) $3 (kids 5-12) under age 5- free, Woolly Worm Registration $5.00

6. Music on the Veranda at Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC – Free concerts every Sunday evening from 5-8:00pm. Enjoy local favorites the Harris Brothers, The Neighbors, Mountain Radio, Todd Wright and more on the veranda of this classic historic hotel. Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show! Performances rain or shine- find the concert indoors in inclement weather. Drinks and Tavern Fare available.
