Watauga County Adds Middle School Sports Program

Baseball has been added to the list of middle school athletic opportunities for students in the Watauga County Schools.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer this program this spring and we’re excited about adding a middle school softball team for girls next fall,” said Assistant Superintendent and Human Resources Director Dr. Stephen Martin. “We’re fortunate that a group of very committed and very motivated parents came forward to support these new programs with their time, their energy, and their financial contributions. I give them a lot of credit for making this program possible.”

Martin also praised the support received from other sources. “We’ve had a great deal of assistance from Coach Lee and the Watauga High School baseball program and good support from Watauga County Parks and Recreation to help establish this new program. We are hoping more of the community will be backing our middle school baseball team this spring and our softball team next fall as news of these teams spreads.”

Moore brings a strong baseball resume to his role as coach. He has extensive coaching experience at the college level, including two years as an assistant coach at ASU and three years as assistant head coach at Georgia Southern. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies and played in their organization for several years, and was an all-conference player for four years at Western Carolina University.

“We are very pleased to have a person of Coach Moore’s caliber to launch this program,” commented Martin. “We are confident he will do a great job of helping our players develop their skills and build character as part of a team.”

The 18-member team is coached by Chris Moore and will play 13 games in its opening season this spring. The team schedule and other middle school athletic information are available online through a link for middle school athletics under the parents and students heading on the Watauga County Schools website.

The baseball team, like the middle school track and football teams, is a district wide team. Each K-8 school has its own middle school basketball and volleyball team. The middle school athletic program in the Watauga County Schools is directed by Hardin Park Assistant Principal Jim Godwin.
