Wee-Cycle was born out of our concern in recycling children’s clothing within our community. There is a goldmine of recyclable items in each of our homes. Our idea is to offer a cheaper path to children’s fashion and more while tapping into Boone’s green consciousness.

2. App State Blazing Easels: Native American Art – 3:00-4:30pm “Cave Painting”: Draw a stylized Native American cave painting or symbols, such as the eagle, and add color using pastel and crayon.

6. Elk Knob State Park “The Northern Hardwood Forest” – 1:00pm This natural community is rare outside of Canada and New England and present mostly in the Appalachian Mountains south of Pennsylvania. Come find out about the plants and animals that you won’t see anywhere else in the

South. Meet at the park office at 1 p.m. on Saturday March 14th.

7. Grandfather Mountain State Park “Unwanted Necklace” – 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Appropriate for ages 5 and up; children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ever wonder what kind of necklaces animals and birds wear? Join Ranger Sicard for a program that will tell you what kind of necklaces they wear and how we can keep them from wearing them. As a reminder of the necklaces we do not want the animals and birds to wear you will be able to make your own necklace to take home with you.

8. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public. 3. Grandfather Mountain State Park “To Build a Fire” – (Appropriate for all ages – children under 16 must be accompanied by adult)

Fire is one of the cornerstones of human civilization that many of us take for granted in today’s modern lifestyle. Could you build a fire if necessary? Join a Park Ranger at Grandfather Mountain State Park to learn techniques on fire building and emergency fire starting for camping, heating or survival. Participants will learn about fuel sources, alternative fire starters and some of the science behind fire. This program will last approximately one hour. Children must be accompanied by an adult and please leave pets at home.

Registration for our Winter Sale is now open on the Wee-Cycle website. Please be sure to confirm your contact information, and address when you log into your profile for the first time. Any check that is not picked up at the end of the sale will be mailed to the address in your profile.

Remember, the sooner you sign up and choose a drop off time, the better. If you wait until the last minute the times you want may be taken and you will have to wait and drop off at re-stock.

August Weekend Events: Summer’s Bountiful Harvest 08/24-26

Here in the middle of August, as the nights are getting longer and it gets dark earlier, gardens all over are ripening and coming into the harvest phase. Our Summer season has had it’s ups and downs with a very early Spring, some weather mood swings, and several days and weeks of extreme heat. Some gardens, including mine, have suffered with blight on the tomatoes and other vegetables. This has been disheartening with the hard work put into the process. Even so, gardens have flourished and produced a Summer’s Bountiful Harvest!

It has been exciting to see how plants and vegetables grow and ripen on the vines, and having been given the privilege of  teaching our kids about God’s creation. We have also been saving seeds as produce has matured and the amount of seeds put into each plant is just amazing!

As I have pondered this, my heart filled with joy knowing that just as seeds grow and produce a harvest, we produce a bountiful harvest teaching our children and watching them mature and grow! I have to stop and thank God for the gifts that He’s given me…my family. Take the time today to do the same and let your family know how much they mean to you! Start with this weekend and go have some fun.

August Weekend Events: Summer Days Are Quickly Fading! 08/17-19

As school has gotten underway and routines are being put into place, life for many is settling down with schedules instead of spontaneity. That in itself is not a bad thing, it just means that we are moving from one season to the next, and it is happening fast!

Just in the past week, the weather has been changing and getting cooler at night and darker quicker. This says that summer days are quickly fading, but that doesn’t mean that the fun of summer is over! Quite the contrary. There are always lots of exciting activities to do around the High Country.
