High Country Family Weekend Events February 20 – 22

I hope everyone is staying warm and not getting cabin fever too bad. Let’s face it, it is too cold. At least the ski resorts are able to have a wonderful season. If you get out this weekend, dress warmly and be safe on the roads as more snow and wintry mix is in the forecast. What is happening this weekend in the High Country for families? February 20:

1. Snow Days at Chick-fil-A –  Kids, 12 & under, go into the store between 9am-2pmand receive a FREE hot chocolate. Coloring books will also be provided during events.

2. Free Sledding at Beech Mountain – This sledding hill attracts people from all over the Southeast. We are lucky to have it in our backyard for free of charge for children 12 and under. Adults are allowed to sled with their small children. The hill is situated right beside the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce.

3. Open Play Time at The Children’s Playhouse – Come spend quality family time exploring our art activities, pretend vet clinic, climbing wall, dress-up area, ball pit and more! $5 per person admission or buy a membership for the whole family for $100 per year. Open play hours are 10-5 Tuesday-Fridays and 10-3:00 on Saturdays.

5. Children’s Playhouse Parent’s Night Out – Kids have a blast with wonderful ASU volunteers while parents enjoy a night out. Cost for nonmembers is $15 for the first child, $8 per additional sibling; members pay $12 and $6. The 2014-2015 Parent’s Night Out at The Children’s Playhouse are 5:30-8:30 pm on January 30th, February 20th, March 20th, and April 24th. Call 828-263-0011 to sign up.

6. Midnight Blast at Appalachian Ski Mountain – The region’s only late-night skiing and snowboarding! The slopes will be open continuously from 5pm – 12 Midnight.

February 21:

3. Tissue Paper Frame: 10am – 12pm Drop in. Drop in. Take home a completed project. Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun. Ages 3 and up

5. The Winter Hike at Elk Knob State Park  – 1:00pm: Come out for some great exercise and winter beauty as Elk Knob braves the cold for some great views at the summit of the mountain. Meet at the Summit Trailhead and dress appropriately for the weather keeping in mind that layering will work the best in cold and windy conditions. Be sure to bring some water. 6. Raptors at Grandfather Mtn Park – 4:00PM-4:30PM – Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

There are many kinds of birds that live in this area; some migrate, some are year round. Some eat seeds and some eat other birds and other small creatures…these birds are Raptors or Birds of Prey. 7. Bonfires at Chetola – Enjoy some outdoor fun with your friends at the new fire pit by Chetola Lake at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Bonfires are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. every Saturday evening, weather permitting. Kids can purchase $5 s’mores kits and roast their marshmallows over the open fire. The event also features an outdoor cash bar and live music. The event is free and open to the public.
