WAMY Hosts Children’s Book Sale to Fight Poverty

WAMY Community Action, a local non-profit that has been helping the communities of Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey (WAMY) counties for almost 50 years, is hosting a children’s book fair to raise funds for programs like its Gardening Community fund. The Gardening program provides monetary vouchers to low-income clients that are used to purchase seeds, plants, soil amendments, and canning and freezing supplies for home and community gardens.

The book fair began Wednesday April 6th, 2011  and will continue daily Mondays through Thursdays until April 15th from 9am to 4pm. It is located at 225 Birch Street Suite 2, in the same building as Boone Drug at Deerfield.

Jane Lentz, Executive Director of WAMY Community Action, said “Due to the loss of federal funding, WAMY has set a goal to raise $80,000 in private donations from members of the community.” This WAMY fundraiser comes at a time when funding for non-profits is being cut on every level, and local private donations are making a direct impact on non-profit organizations’ overall success.

Members of the community who can’t make it to the fundraiser are asked to go online at www.wamycommunityaction.org/donate and make a small donation that will help WAMY work towards it mission of alleviating the causes and effects of poverty through a grassroots approach to helping people help themselves.
