Watauga County Library Summer Activities June 20 – 23

Watauga County Library Mad Science OlympicsWatauga County Library has a fun summer planned for High Country Families. Has your child joined the summer reading program? If not, it is not too late and there are prizes involved! Also, included is lots of fun family events. The theme this year is Getting Active, where you will explore our community’s passion to play and get involved in activities. Check out below all the fun events planned for this week!

Also, the library offers FREE access to ABC Mouse! This website for kids has thousands of fun, educational activities covering reading, art, math, music and more. Use it on any of the computers in our Youth Services section.

11:00a.m. – Check It! Teen Financial Literacy: As digital natives, teens have grown used to the online word but do they know enough to protect themselves? Focus will be on identity theft and online fraud: identifying common scams and learning to protect yourself, online and in real life (IRL).

4:00p.m. – Brer Rabbit Stories with ReVonda Crow: Brer Rabbit is a trickster character in folktales of African, African-American, and Native American Culture. Brer Rabbit is the consummate trickster, who typically matches wits with Brer Fox, whom he always bests.

Little Sketchers with Ms. Julie: Little Sketchers is a program that provides young children from ages 6 to 12 with the tools to discover the artist within. Through the use of visual meditation, group projects, individual activities and instrumental music, the children will learn ways to help uncover the seeds of their creativity.

11:00a.m. – JumpBunch with Ms. Tiana: JumpBunch is a part of our Active Story Time Series, happening every Wednesday during our Summer Reading Program. Active Story Times are designed for ages 5 and under, and their parents. Come join the fun and get active with us!

9:30a.m. – Mad Science Olympics: “Marvels of Motion – “Come one, come all… to the Mad Science Physics Olympics! This interactive event is all about the fun-damentals of moving science including Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion and all sorts of surprises including dancing, chemically assisted football tossing, and even amazing “space-age” rocket packs. Children will have a chance to compete in wacky events, while the mad scientists prepare to unveil their top-secret motion machine. Come and discover the science behind some of your favorite Olympic sports and find out why this show is such a “blast!”
